No. 15/14 Towson Men’s Lacrosse Advances to CAA Title Game with Overtime Win vs. Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. – The No. 15/14 and 1-seed Towson University men's lacrosse team earned its fourth overtime victory, defeating Hofstra 11-10 to advance to the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) title game and win its ninth straight contest.
 
Towson (10-5) came back from down three in the third quarter, but Hofstra (8-7) tied the game with 2:28.  The Tigers drew a penalty at the end of regulation to go man-up.  The Pride held off the penalty, but Mikey Weisshaar forced a turnover to keep the ball on offense.  Bode Maurer scored on a high-to-low shot with 1:43 left in the overtime period to win the game.
 
With the win, Towson will play 3-seed Drexel for the CAA title at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Saturday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are available here: https://www.gofevo.com/group/2025caamlax.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson outshot Hofstra 50-38 and had 37 ground balls to Hofstra's 27.  Hofstra had 19 saves to Towson's nine.
  • Mikey Weisshaar earned an eight-point game, setting a new career-high, with five goals and three assists, also having three caused turnovers.  Ronan Fitzpatrick had two goals and two assists while Bode Maurer had two goals, the game-winner in overtime and a game-tying goal in the fourth quarter.
  • Luke Downs notched the win in goal, having nine saves in 62:17 of play.
  • Matt Constantinides went 12-for-21 from the faceoff-X, grabbing five ground balls.
  • For Hofstra, Drew Bogardus finished with four goals while Trevor Natalie had three goals.  Shea Kennedy got the loss despite 19 saves in goal.
How It Happened:
  • Towson got off to a fast start as Mikey Weisshaar scored in the first 30 seconds with a laser shot past two defenders.  Hofstra got its first goal a minute later to tie the game up.
  • After some back and forth, Towson drew a cross check penalty.  Chop Gallagher got the pass and scored on the crease dive from the side.  A minute later off a restart, Ronan Fitzpatrick scored on a run away from cage to give Towson a 3-1 lead with 9:34 left in the first.
  • After Hofstra scored, Towson had two long possessions, with the second resulting in Weisshaar's second goal as he drew a short stick, side stepped and scored.  Towson nearly held off Hofstra the rest of the quarter, but a goal from John Madsen made it 4-3 Towson after one.
  • Hofstra tied the game up in the opening minute of the second.  Each side battled back and forth with several turnovers and wide shots. 
  • With 3:09 to go in the quarter, Hofstra took its first lead from a Lorenzo Varona goal.  A minute later unsettled on a clear, Weisshaar notched the hat trick with a quick fire and score.  The teams were tied 5-5 at the half.
  • Following an exchange of goals, Hofstra went on 3-0 run, begun by two Drew Bogardus goals and continued with faceoff wins.  Hofstra led 9-6 with 7:45 to go in the third.
  • Towson halted the run with a catch and shoot goal from Weisshaar to Ryan Schrier on the doorstep.  For the next several minutes, the two sides combined for six turnovers.  Towson broke the deadlock in an unsettled situation as Fitzpatrick was open on the doorstep off the pass from Weisshaar.  Towson trailed 9-8 after three.
  • Towson's defense forced a shot clock violation then burst ahead for the lead.  Fitzpatrick found Bode Maurer from behind the cage to Bode Maurer for the tying goal.  A half-minute later, Towson took the lead with a perfect shot to the upper corner by Weisshaar as Towson led 10-9 with 10:44 in regulation. 
  • Luke Downs and Shea Kennedy held firm in cage for the next several minutes.  With 2:28 left, Bogardus scored to tie the game.  Towson forced a shot clock violation on Hofstra and cleared, with two Weisshaar shots being saved, but a Hofstra interference penalty gave the ball to Towson on offense.  Regulation ended at 10-10.
  • Hofstra held off the man-down situation, then Weisshaar forced a turnover to keep the ball on offense.  After a couple of shots, Maurer got the ball from Josh Webber and scored on the laser to give Towson the 11-10 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Towson is 4-0 in overtime games this season, defeating Delaware, Stony Brook, Loyola and Hofstra.  The game-winners have all been from different players: Mikey Weisshaar, Josh Webber, Owen Scott and Bode Maurer.
  • Matt Constantinides became Towson's all-time ground balls leader, standing with 353 all-time.  He surpassed Alex Woodall, who had 351 ground balls from 2017-19.
  • Mikey Weisshaar surpassed the 100-career goals mark tonight, having 103 in his career.  He has 44 goals this season, tying for fifth in Towson single season history.
  • Joe Petro has 22 caused turnovers this season, tying for ninth in Towson single season history.
  • It is the first time Towson has won against the same opponent where the games were back-to-back in the Shawn Nadelen era.
  • All-time, Towson is 15-4 in the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament.  The Tigers make the CAA title game for the second straight year and third time in four years.
