LEWISBURG, Pa. – A late equalizer when
Sophie Thibeault saw the Towson University women's soccer team come away with a 1-1 draw at Bucknell on Sunday.
The Tigers and Bisons played tight throughout the first half with both teams getting their chances. Bucknell took the initiative to start the second half and took the lead just 105 seconds into the final 45.
From then on, Towson fought for the equalizer, eventually culminating in the Thibeault goal in the 83rd minute.
"I was really proud of the team from the whole build up of that goal," Thibeault said. "Coming on the road to play a team that has won the Patriot League a lot, it was really nice to be able to fight back and get that goal after putting in so much effort the whole game."
Key Stats:
- Towson continues to dominate possession with a slow build up offense, winning the possession for the game 60-40.
- The Tigers put 16 shots towards the Bisons goalkeeper in the second half alone. Bucknell had 16 for the whole game.
- Thibeault now leads the team with three goals. She was the team's leading goal scorer last year with seven.
How It Happened:
- The first half started with the Tigers getting four of the first five shots before the Bisons responded with seven of the next eight shots.
- Composure in the back line, led by captains and starting center backs Sydney Lindeman and Brooke Birrell, allowed the Towson to keep Bucknell off the board despite good pressure.
- The second half started with the quick goal for Bucknell, which then saw the staunch Bisons defense fall back, hoping to kill the game.
- The Tigers pushed for the equalizer with the climax coming in the final 10 minutes.
- Just inside the final 10 minutes of the game, there were two separate instances of significant contact between opposing players in the Towson offensive penalty area which led to no calls.
- Towson got the ball back on a throw in which Emma Kirkpatrick through down the line. Malin Bernt Shops fought to get around the Bisons defender before putting the ball into the box. A loud "let it drop" could be heard on the pitch before Thibeault came flying in and put it away on a first time finish.
- The Tigers nearly took the game when an overextended Bucknell backline pushed themselves 10 yards past the midfield line allowing Kirkpatrick to receive a pass standing behind the backline in the defensive half. She dribbled all the way down to the box before missing the shot wide.
Inside the Numbers:
- Towson moves to 5-8-1 all-time versus Bucknell and 3-3-1 in Lewisburg.
- The Tigers did what a top-25 team in the country couldn't do and score in the run of play against the Bisons.
- Towson enters conference play 2-2-3 after going 2-2-5 last year in non-conference.
Next Game:
