Down seven points with just over five minutes to go, Towson (0-6, 0-2 CAA) came down the field and scored on Cleveland Charlton's second touchdown catch of the game to have a chance to tie Monmouth (4-2, 3-0 CAA) with 1:41, but a 35-yard extra point attempt missed wide, and the Hawks ran out the clock to hold the win.

Key Situations
  • 1st quarter: Monmouth received to begin the game and scored with hurry-up offense, scoring on a Smith four-yard run just over a minute into the game.  After an exchange of short drives, Andrew Indorf went down deep to Aaron Enterline for 45 yards, then had Enterline complete the drive with a nine-yard touchdown to make it 7-6 Monmouth with 6:34 in the first.  A five-minute drive resulted in a field goal for Monmouth as the Hawks led 10-6 after one.
  • 2nd quarter: Into the second, Towson used short passes to go down field, finalizing with an Indorf six-yard drop-off pass to Xavier Pugh for the touchdown and a 13-10 Towson lead 3:40 into the period.  Monmouth retook the lead on the next drive on a short passing touchdown.  Towson went for a final drive, converting on 4th and 15 with an Indorf scramble.  Two plays later, Kemarrion Battles surged forward for an eight-yard rushing touchdown, giving Towson a 20-17 lead at the half.  Myles Johnson intercepted a pass to prevent a Monmouth chance in the final minutes.
  • 3rd quarter: Another deep pass to Enterline, 37 yards set up by Indorf getting out of a potential sack in the pocket, set up Towson for 1st and goal.  On third down, Cleveland Charlton made a tremendous one-handed jumping catch in the back of the end zone for the seven-yard touchdown and a 27-17 Towson lead with 11:24 left in the third.  Monmouth responded next drive with a number of short passes to go down field, finishing with a 13-yard catch in the corner of the end zone by Gavin Nelson to make it 27-24 Towson, 8:08 left in the period.  The following drive, Trey Adams knocked down a third and goal pass at the line to force a field goal attempt, where Monmouth tied it 27-27 with 44 seconds to go in the quarter, the eventual end of period score.
  • 4th quarter: Immediately into the quarter, a deep pass was picked off and returned 71 yards for a touchdown by Amori McNeil for Monmouth to give the home team the lead 34-27.  A 42-yard kickoff return by Jacob Zollar set Towson up near midfield.  Towson got a 27-yard pass to Enterline and got into the red zone, with a pass interference penalty continuing the drive.  Pugh finished the drive on a one-yard burst up the middle to tie the game 34-34 with 9:55 to play.  The other side, Monmouth used rushing plays on seven of eight plays, including converting a fourth down from its own 34, finishing off the drive with a 41-yard pass to Nelson for the touchdown to make it 41-34 Hawks with 5:09 left in the game.  Aided by a couple of Monmouth personal foul penalties, Towson had fourth and five on the Monmouth 8. A pass to the end zone was deflected up, being caught by Charlton for the score.  A personal foul forced the extra point attempt from the Towson 18, with the attempt missing right.  Monmouth ran out the clock and won 41-40.
