Field Hockey Falls to VCU

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University field hockey team lost 1-0 to VCU on Sunday. The first 54 minutes of the game went by without a goal, but the Rams (6-5) would break the tie with just over five minutes left to defeat the Tigers (4-8) by a 1-0 scoreline.

Key Situations
  • 1st Quarter: The first 14 minutes of the game went by without a shot from either team. The Tigers earned a penalty corner with 11 seconds left in the period, but Ann Njoroge's shot was saved by the VCU goalie and Ella Jefferson's follow-up was kept out as well as the game entered the second quarter 0-0.
  • 2nd Quarter: The Tigers kept the Rams from recording a shot in the second quarter as well. Towson's best chance came when Delfina Larripa received the ball just outside the left side of the VCU circle and sent a ball into the circle which was met by Skylar Santucci, but the Ram's goalie made the save to send a scoreless contest into halftime.
  • 3rd Quarter: With six minutes left in the third quarter, Else Wismans stole the ball at the Ram's 25-yard line and carried into the circle. The freshmen shot through the goalie's legs but was denied the first goal of the game by a defensive save. The score held at 0-0 to begin the 4th.
  • 4th Quarter: In the first five minutes of the period, Jillian LaBar and Delfina Larripa were denied goals by saves. The Tigers would earn three penalty corners in a minute but were still unable to break the deadlock. With just over five minutes left in the game VCU earned a penalty corner and scored from it to take a late lead after almost 55 scoreless minutes. The Rams would see out the game from there to defeat the Tigers 1-0.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • This was Towson's fourth game of the season to enter the fourth quarter scoreless, the Tigers are 1-3 in those games.
 
Next Game
  • The Tigers are back in action Friday, October 9 at 3 p.m. when Towson will begin a second straight road weekend at CAA rival Northeastern.
