GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Towson University softball team played its first two games of the Pirate Clash hosted by East Carolina on Friday. After Towson allowed eight runs per game in its first eight games,
Olivia Trombley and
Amanda Medina allowed only one hit each over 12.0 combined innings. The Tigers allowed zero runs on the day and earned an 18-0 win over St. Bonaventure followed by a thrilling 2-0 win over the hosts that saw
Kinsley Peek deliver the winning hit in the 8
th inning after both starting pitchers took shutouts through seven innings.
Game 1: Towson 18, St. Bonaventure 0
Key Stats:
- Six Tigers had multiple hits and seven had multiple RBIs as Towson racked up a season high 19 hits and 18 runs in total.
- Kaci Benton hit 4-4 with her second homerun of the season.
- Addie Ferguson hit 3-3 with her third homerun of the season.
- Amanda Medina earned her second win of the season pitching 4.0 shutout innings allowing only one hit with six strikeouts.
- Ava Lomelin receives the loss for the Bonnies.
How it Happened:
- The first batter of the game, Kinsley Peek, singled and the second batter Kaci Benton hit a two-run homerun to immediately put Towson up 2-0. A pair of singles put two on for Isabella Canesi with two outs and the senior hit a two-run double to make it 4-0 after one inning.
- A hit-by-pitch and Grace Franczyk single put two on with one out for Addie Ferguson who hit Towson's second homerun of the game to give Towson a 7-run lead.
- Amanda Medina kept the Bonnies hitless through two innings.
- Alyssa Myint led off the 3rd with a double and Kaci Benton doubled her home three batters later to push the lead to eight. A fielder's choice made it nine before a Mackenzie Gorczyca two-run triple put Towson up eleven. Amanda Ashe singled to make it 12-0 before a bases loaded walk, passed ball, and fielding error each allowed a run on consecutive plays to cap off an eight-run inning and give Towson a 15-0 lead.
- Medina only allowed one hit over the next two innings.
- Benton singled to lead off the 4th and with two outs a Ferguson triple and Ashe single gave Towson a 17-0 lead entering the 5th.
- Franczyk came up to bat with two on and two outs in the top of the 5th and hit an RBI single to give Towson runs in all five innings of the game and make it 18-0.
- Jessa Pieters kept the Bonnies off the board in the 5th to seal a five-inning 18-0 Towson win.
Game 2: Towson 2, East Carolina 0
Key Stats:
- Kinsley Peek hit a double and had the only two RBIs of the game from a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning.
- Olivia Trombley earns her second win of the season after pitching an 8.0 inning complete game shutout allowing only one hit and one walk with five strikeouts while taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning.
- Sydney Rainford receives the loss after pitching 7.0 innings and allowing four hits and one run with five walks and five strikeouts.
How it Happened
- Neither Olivia Trombley nor the Pirates Sydney Rainford allowed a hit in the first three innings.
- Kinsley Peek hit a leadoff double in the 4th and Kaci Benton singled to put runners on the corners. But a groundball to short saw Peek thrown out at home and ECU escaped the jam unscathed.
- Trombley only needed to throw four pitches to get through the bottom of the 4th.
- The 5th and 6th innings also transpired without a hit from either team.
- Mackenzie Gorczyca singled with one out in the top of the 7th, but the Tigers failed to get on the board in the frame.
- Trombley walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 7th, and an error put a pair in scoring position with one out. But Trombley struck out the next batter and ended the inning with a pop-out to complete seven scoreless and hitless innings.
- The game entered extra innings and in the top of the 8th Taylor Broadbent was hit by a pitch and Leah Mears hit an infield single to load the bases for Peek who finally broke the deadlock with a two-run single giving Towson an eighth inning lead.
- Trombley remained on the mound for the bottom of the 8th and saw her no-hit bid end at 7.0 innings as a single put runners on the corners with no outs. But Trombley struck out the next batter and retired the next two via a flyout and groundout to complete an eight-inning, one-hit, complete game shutout and deliver Towson a thrilling 2-0 win.
