Towson Tennis Drops Hard-Fought 4-3 Decision to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The Towson University women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Navy Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Tigers defeated Georgetown Friday night at the Naval Academy.

The Tigers (4-3) played without junior Chandrè Boshoff, who plays No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles, for the second consecutive match. Senior Sania Suchinsky, who is 11-4 lifetime on court 6, has not played this calendar year due to an illness.

Navy (8-4) earned the doubles point. The Mids won on court 3 but the Tigers tied it up after a 7-5 win by Aubrey Carper and Chloe Courtnage at No. 2. Towson's top pair of Kiersten Tambe and Tamzin Pountney led 3-1, after an early service break, but dropped a tight 7-5 set to decide the point.

Navy went up 3-0 after straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, but the remaining matches were extremely competitive.

Gaia Montecchi improved to 6-1 in singles play this season – winning  a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2. The sophomore has won 11 of her last 12 singles matches since last April.

Pountney earned a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 for her third consecutive victory.

Ashira Murray (No. 4) won the seventh straight time this season. The junior took a second set tie-breaker then rallied to win the super breaker 11-9 – winning the last five points of the match.

Tambe battled at No. 1 – dropping a 6-4, 7-6 decision. The sophomore had set point in the second to force a super tie breaker.

"This was a tremendous opportunity for our team," Towson head coach Jamie Peterson said. "It is our best effort against Navy in the 10 years that I have been head coach. We just didn't capitalize on a couple opportunities, but I am proud of the effort and competitiveness this weekend."
