Tiger Offense Roars vs. Canisius in Series Finale

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team faced Canisius on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series and the first of the season at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Towson's (5-4) and Canisius' (2-7) offenses came alive in series game three as the Golden Griffins got out to a 4-2 lead halfway through the game. The Tigers took the lead in the home half of the fifth, and after losing it in the next frame, scored 10 runs over their final three offensive frames to win 16-7 in their home opener.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson pitcher Jacob Whiteman (1-0) earned the win in relief after tossing 3.1 one-hit, shutout frames. Whiteman struck out four.
  • Canisius pitcher Noah Albano (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits and four walks in 0.2 innings pitched.
 
How it Happened:
  • Bennett Cox hit a leadoff home run to start the game, putting Canisius up early. With two runners in scoring position later in the frame, Spinosa's single up the middle extended the Golden Griffin's lead to three.
  • Brian Heckelman's single up the middle in the bottom of the third scored two runners in scoring position to make it 3-2.
  • Bremner hit an RBI groundout to short in the fifth, putting Canisius back up two.
  • Nick LoBello came to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth and drove in two on a double to right center field. Three straight walks to follow scored two more, giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
  • The Golden Griffins added three runs on two hits and four walks in the next frame, putting them back up by one.
  • The Tigers added four runs on four hits in the sixth. After Max D'Alessandro's one-out walk, Keldrin Rodriguez tripled to right to tie the game. Ben Nugent drove in K. Rodriguez on a single to center. After a pitching change, Yariel Rodriguez doubled to left, scoring Nugent. AJ Kolb followed with a single through the right rise to put the Black & Gold up 10-7.
  • The Tigers tacked on sixth runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Frank Adamski Jr.'s bases clearing double to left field. Two runs were scored on bases loaded walks and one on K. Rodriguez's sacrifice fly.
  • The Golden Griffins went down in order in the final frame, giving the Tigers a 16-7 win in the series finale.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Whiteman's 3.1 shutout frames mark the longest shutout appearance of his career. His one hit allowed is the least he's allowed in a 3.0+ inning outing.
  • LoBello finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles, RBI's and runs scored. It marks the first three-hit game of his Towson career. His two doubles mark his first extra base hits of the season.
  • Y. Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBI's and three runs scored. It marks his first extra-base hit, multi-hit and two RBI game this season.
