TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University women's tennis team defeated Coppin State 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
Ashira Murray and
Gaia Montecchi both improved to 9-2 singles play, while lightly-used sophomores
Sofia Anderson and
Jocelynn Ginsberg also helped the Tigers improve to 6-5 on the season.
The home team earned the doubles points after
Kiersten Tambe and
Tamzin Pountney rallied from a 4-3 deficit to win 6-4 on court 1. Ginsberg, a sophomore playing in her first collegiate match, teamed up with classmate Montecchi for a 6-2 victory on court 3.
Murray gave the home team a 2-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. Montecchi made the score 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Since last April, the two have combined to win 26-of-30 singles matches.
Anderson clinched the match with her first singles win – a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at No. 6. The sophomore is now 1-1 in both singles and doubles this season.
Pountney (No. 3) and
Aubrey Carper (No. 5), two more sophomores on
Jamie Peterson's squad, also won singles matches.
The Tigers played without junior
Chandrè Boshoff, who plays No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles, and senior
Sania Suchinsky, who is 11-4 lifetime on court 6.
"We won today but we didn't play particularly well,"
