Towson Women’s Lacrosse Drops to #22 Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team took a short trip to Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore on Wednesday evening to face off against #22 Loyola University Maryland. The Tigers (3-6, 1-0 CAA) dropped to the Greyhounds (5-4, 1-1 Patriot League). 

Key Stats vs. #22 Loyola 

  • Loyola took the edge in saves (6-8) and turnovers (18-19). 
  • The Greyhounds won the draw control game, 15-9. 
  • Loyola scooped 22 grounds balls compared to 12 for Towson. 

How It Happened vs. #22 Loyola 

  • Loyola opened the first quarter of play with a four-goal run. 
  • Savannah Safchuck added a goal for the Tigers four minutes into the second quarter to put the Tigers on the board.  
  • Towson made three consecutive shots on goal before Loyola regained possession. The Greyhounds tallied another goal off a free position attempt, leading 5-1.  
  • Loyola added another goal before Gabby Bjugan found the back of the net, keeping the Tigers to a 3 point deficit.  
  • The Greyhounds tallied two more goals before Hannah Lewis scored for the first time for the Tigers late in the period to make the score 3-8 into the break. 
  • Both teams exchanged two sets of goals in the third period, but Loyola added two late-quarter goals to put them ahead 12-5 heading into the last quarter. 
  • The Greyhounds scored three more times in the beginning of the fourth quarter. 
  • Elise Smigiel and Hannah Lewis added goals for the Tigers at the end of the period, but ultimately fell 7-15.  

Up Next
The Tigers are slated to travel to Williamsburg, Virginia on Saturday, March 21 for the team's second Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matchup against William & Mary.
