Towson Tennis Defeats Hampton

TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University women's tennis team defeated Hampton 4-3 in a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) match that concluded Saturday evening. Play was suspended Friday afternoon because of inclement weather with the Tigers leading 1-0 after taking two of the three doubles matches.

Towson (7-8, 1-3 CAA) went up 2-0 when Hampton's Tanya Midzi retired on court 1. Towson's Kiersten Tambe took the opening set Friday and was up 1-0 in the second.

Gaia Montecchi made the score 3-0 with a straight set victory at No. 2 singles. The sophomore improved to 12-3 this season with 11 straight set wins. Since last April, she has won 17-of-20 singles matches.

Chandrè Boshoff clinched the match with a victory over Toffee Ghorab at No. 3. The junior won Friday's set 6-2 then dropped the second set by the same score against an opponent who was 7-2 heading into the match. Boshoff won the super breaker 10 points to eight to give the home team a 4-0 lead.

Hampton (6-6, 0-3 CAA) won the last three singles matches for the final margin.

Towson played without Ashira Murray and Tamzin Pountney, who have combined for 16 singles victories this season. Murray is 10-3 with five victories each on courts 4 and 5. Pountney is 6-6 with wins at No. 3 and No. 4.
