HAMPTON, Va. – The No. 16 Towson University men's lacrosse team has earned its spot into the 2026 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament with a dominant 21-5 victory at Hampton on Saturday afternoon for the team's sixth consecutive victory.
Towson (8-3, 4-0 CAA) dominated Hampton (0-11, 0-4 CAA) in all facets of the game, including outscoring the Pirates 16-2 in the first half. 14 different Tigers recorded at least one goal.
The Tigers, still alone in first place in the CAA, have secured a spot in the CAA Tournament in three weeks. A win next week over Fairfield would give Towson hosting rights.
With the win, Towson has won 22 consecutive games against league opponents (including league tournament wins), the eighth-longest streak in Division I history.
Key Stats
- Towson outshot Hampton 57-33 in the game and won 23-of-30 faceoffs. Towson also had a 40-6 advantage on ground balls.
- In his second game back, Ronan Fitzpatrick finished with five goals to lead all players. Mikey Weisshaar had two goals and three assists while Alex Roussel notched two goals and two assists.
- The Tigers used three keepers in cage, beginning with Matt Nilan for the win with a save and one goal allowed in the first quarter. Danny Domeniconi followed with a save and two goals allowed in 23:48 of time then Ashby Shepherd earned nine saves with just two goals allowed in the final 21:12. Logan Meighan finished with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and an assist.
- All Towson faceoff players won at least 50%, led by Myles Quandt winning 11-of-12. Kai Lopez earned 7-of-8 while Austin Welch finished with a 5-for-10 day.
How it Happened
- Towson lost the opening faceoff but quickly caused a turnover and went to offense. Owen Scott buried a shot inside the right corner from Will Schoonmaker. Towson continued to pressure and added to its lead, including Alex Roussel getting the pass from Ryan Schrier for the slam dunk score, then Kai Lopez scoring on a faceoff win to make it 3-0 Towson in the opening 2:08.
- Off a Hampton save, Towson's ride forced a 20-second violation and went back to offense. Off a loose ball scrum, Mikey Weisshaar picked up the ball and passed off to Roussel for the behind-the-back finish. Towson was up 4-0 less than four minutes in.
- Towson held off a man-down situation but Hampton scored its first goal with 7:49 remaining in the first. The Tigers countered with three relatively quick goals, including a goal while falling from Ronan Fitzpatrick and a goal while jumping by Mikey Weisshaar, to lead 7-1 after one.
- Towson's offensive attack continued to push into the second quarter after James Azbill took a Hampton turnover across midfield, Jimmy Conner scored on a shot straight away, starting a 5-0 run. Weisshaar, Andrew Goldt, Brody Morgan and Fitzpatrick all scored in that sprint as Towson led 12-1 less than two minutes into the second.
- Fitzpatrick continued to roll and got two more goals in a span of less than 40 seconds and sent Towson's lead to 13. Hampton stopped the run with a Nikki Rattan goal to make it 14-2 Towson with 7:40 left in the second.
- Towards the end of the half, Towson's pressure continued, adding two more goals from Trevor Phipps and James Azbill to lead 16-2 at the break.
- Towson's reserves took over for the majority of the second half, with Danny Dominiconi having come in to start the second quarter and later in the third, Ashby Shepherd going into the cage. Hampton scored the first goal of the quarter, answered by Michael Katz on his first score of the season less than a minute later.
- Towson's new close defense helped fend off the Pirates, with Nick Chan and Hayden Goscinski causing turnovers. Hampton added two goals towards the end of the quarter as Towson led 17-5 after three.
- The reserves settled in during the fourth quarter and controlled the action. After several minutes of back-and-forth, Matt Burnam broke the quarter ice with a transition goal from Logan Meighan.
- Fitzpatrick added his fifth goal soon after a clear as the Tigers continued to get ground balls for possessions. Jack Bowman and Katz added goals as Towson built the lead to 16. The Tigers held the rest of the way and won 21-5.
Inside the Numbers
- Mikey Weisshaar moved into second all-time in career points for Towson with 211, now only being behind Bob Griebe, who had 221 points from 1988-91. Weisshaar has earned at least one point in his last 50 games played.
- Towson has earned a six-game winning streak for the third consecutive year. Last year, Towson won 10 straight games going into the NCAA Tournament.
- Alex Roussel has at least four points in each of his last four games.
- Towson improves to 4-0 all-time vs. Hampton.
