WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Towson University baseball team continued Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play in game two against Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at the MU Baseball Field.
Towson (15-17, 4-13 CAA) led Monmouth (18-13, 13-4 CAA) 2-1 after five innings before the Hawks added two in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to claim a 6-2 lead. A two-out rally for the Tigers got them within one in the ninth before the final out was retired, giving Monmouth a 6-5 win in the middle game.
Key Stats:
- Towson pitcher Matt Lynch (0-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings pitched. Lynch struck out one batter.
- Monmouth starter Alec Couture (3-1) earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks in 7.0 innings pitched. Couture struck out five.
How it Happened:
- After Brady Nathison's leadoff single in the first, he moved to second on Heckelman's single and to third on Nich Francuzenko's sacrifice bunt.
- Monmouth's RJ Mustaro hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game.
- Nathison's RBI fielder's choice to second base gave a one-run lead back to the Tigers.
- The Hawks scored two runs on three hits in the sixth to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
- They added two more in the seventh on Buecker's RBI single to right, extending the lead to three.
- Walsh added a sixth run for Monmouth on an RBI double to left field.
- Keldrin Rodriguez's double down the right field line started a two-out rally for the Black & Gold in the ninth. Josh Janove followed with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to three. Singles from Jack Hughes and AJ Kolb loaded the bases before Nathison plated two runs to bring the Tigers within one. Coy Allman hit a fly ball to deep left on the next at-bat but left fielder Nick Lovarco was able to match the over-the-shoulder grab for the final out.
