TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted Hofstra on Friday afternoon in the second of three Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) games at Schuerholz Park this week.
Hofstra (10-15, 5-6 CAA) went ahead 2-0 through the Pride's first four offensive frames. Towson (12-15, 3-11 CAA) took the lead on
Nich Francuzenko's three run homer in the home half of the fourth. The Pride reclaimed a three-run lead before the Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the eighth. Hofstra added three runs in the ninth and held Towson scoreless in the final frame, giving the Pride a 9-6 win in game two.
Key Stats:
- Towson reliever Joey Tuttoilmondo (1-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks in 3.1 innings pitched. Tuttoilmondo struck out five batters.
- Hofstra pitcher Maddon McArthur (2-1) earned the win, allowing one earned run on one hit in 0.2 frames of work.
How it Happened:
- Hofstra added one run on two hits in the top of the third inning to take an early lead.
- Melara hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to add to the Pride's lead.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Max D'Alessandro walked with two outs and moved to second on Frank Adamski Jr.'s single through the left side. Nich Francuzenko followed with a three-run homer to right field, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
- The Pride added three runs on four hits in the sixth to reclaim a lead at 5-3.
- Melara led off the eighth with his second home run of the day, making it a three-run lead for Hofstra.
- In the home half, Nick LoBello hit an RBI triple to left center. After a pitching change, a wild pitch allowed LoBello to score, pulling the Tigers within one. Two batters later, Brian Heckelman hit a solo homer to left field to tie the game.
- The Pride added three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the ninth inning to retake the lead at 9-6.
- The Tigers got one base runner on in the ninth but did not score, setting up a Sunday rubber match after Hofstra's 9-6 win in game two.
