HANOVER, Md. – The Towson University baseball team faced Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Field.
Towson (13-15, 4-11 CAA) went up 4-0 over Coppin State (5-21, 5-10 NEC) in the top of the third before spotting the Eagles three runs in the home half. The Tigers added two in the fifth and eight in the seventh for an 11-run lead. The Eagles scored three in the bottom half and added one run in the ninth before a ground out to third base ended the game. With a 14-7 final score, the Tigers have won six of their last seven games.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Vincent Salvo (2-0) earned the win after allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks. Salvo struck out one batter.
- Coppin State starter Mekenna Wakakuwa (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks in 3.0 innings of work. Wakakuwa struck out three batters.
How it Happened:
- Nich Francuzenko drove in the first two runs of the game on a double to center field in the top of the third. Later in the frame, Coy Allman hit a two-run single to center field, putting the Tigers up by four.
- Jordan Treadwell hit a two-run triple to left center field in the home half, cutting the Eagles' deficit to two runs. Armando Hurtado followed with a sacrifice fly to left to cut it to one.
- The Tigers added two runs in the fifth inning, both on wild pitches, to extend the lead to 6-3.
- Towson added eight runs on four hits in the seventh. Highlighting the frame was Yariel Rodriguez's bases-clearing double, AJ Kolb's two-run single up the middle and Francuzenko's second home run of the year, a two-run shot.
- Coppin State added three runs on three hits in the seventh to cut it down to a 14-6 Towson lead.
- The Eagles added one run in the ninth inning but fell short of sending the game to extras, giving the Tigers a 14-7 win at Joe Cannon Field.
Inside the Numbers:
- Francuzenko posted his second-ever four RBI day after doing so against Norfolk State on Feb. 14. He finished the day 2-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
- Salvo's five innings pitched marked the longest outing of his career.
