Baseball Falls to William & Mary in Sunday’s Series Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University baseball team faced William & Mary in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
 
William & Mary (21-28, 12-15 CAA) and Towson (20-30, 8-19 CAA) traded the lead for much of the early going in Sunday's series finale. That was before the Tribe scored four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to reclaim the lead for the final time in their 14-6 win.
 
Key Stats:­­
  • Towson starter Liam Diehl (1-7) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Diehl struck out six and walked two batters faced.
  • William & Mary pitcher Connor Jernigan (1-4) earned the win after allowing one unearned run on one hit and four walks in 3.0 innings pitched. Jernigan struck out two batters faced.
 
How it Happened:
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Matthew Kosuda grounded into a double play, bringing home one run for the Tribe.
  • After AJ Kolb's infield single in the third, Brian Heckelman homered to left, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
  • The Tribe added four runs on two hits in the home half, most notably Charlie Iriotakis' three-run home run, to put them ahead 5-2.
  • In the next frame, Max D'Alessandro's two-run homer and Kolb's RBI single later in the inning tied the game at five.
  • Nick LoBello hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, giving the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
  • William & Mary scored four runs on five hits and an error in the bottom half, reclaiming the lead at 9-6 after five.
  • The Tribe scored three runs on three hits in the sixth as Kosuda (1) and Iriotakis (2) each picked up RBI base hits.
  • Woolwine's two-run single to left center in the seventh inning extended the Tribe's lead to 14-6.
  • The Tigers failed to score over the final two frames, giving the Tribe a 14-6 win in the series finale.

The Tigers host UMBC on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season at Brooks Robinson Field at John B. Schuerholz Park.
