Towson Women's Lacrosse Drops to No. 11 Stony Brook in the CAA Championship

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team traveled to Long Island for the 2026 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, facing three-time reigning champion No. 11 Stony Brook. Making their first championship appearance in three years, the Tigers (8-11, 5-2 CAA) fell to the Seawolves (17-2, 7-0 CAA), 18-7, on Saturday.

Hannah Lewis and Elise Smigiel each recorded hat tricks to lead Towson offensively, while Luca DeMaio added a goal.

  • Jenna Cardeno recorded 12 saves. 
  • Towson took the edge in draw controls, 14-13. 
  • The Seawolves outshot the Tigers, 41-13.  
 

How it Happened vs. No. 11 Stony Brook 

  • Stony Brook opened the game on a 3-0 run, but Towson answered with back-to-back goals from Luca DeMaio and Elise Smigiel to cut the deficit to one.  
  • After Isabella Caporuscio restored a two-goal lead for the Seawolves, Smigiel converted a free-position attempt to keep Towson within one. 
  • Katie Walsh scored with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter to give Stony Brook a 5-3 lead heading into the second. 
  • Caporuscio struck again early in the second quarter, but Towson responded with a 3-0 run with consecutive goals from Hannah Lewis and another from Smigiel to tie the game for the first time today at 6-6. 
  • Julia Fusco scored twice late in the half to give the Seawolves an 8-6 advantage at the break. 
  • Stony Brook scored six straight goals to build a 12-6 lead from the third to fourth quarter. 
  • Smigiel ended the drought with her third goal of the game at the 10:43 mark - Towson's first goal since 9:04 in the second quarter. 
  • The Seawolves closed the game on a 4-0 run to secure the 18-7 victory.
