Biography
One of the top players in Towson women’s lacrosse history, Shannon Witzel begins her first season as a member of the Tigers’ coaching staff.
A
starter in all 69 games of her college career, Witzel finished her
career with 208 goals and 47 assists. With 255 career points, she ranks
third on the Tigers’ all-time scoring list.
A
second team All-Colonial Athletic Association and IWLCA All-Mid
Atlantic region pick as a senior, Witzel finished her career tied with Ruth Gutridge for the Towson
career record with 208 goals. She ranked second on the team with 32
goals and 44 points. Honored as the Towson University Senior Female
Athlete of the Year, she scored three or more goals six times during
her senior campaign.
Named
as a third team All-America selection by the IWLCA during her junior
season, the Pottstown, Pa. native ranked fourth in NCAA Division I by
averaging 3.59 goals per game. For the second straight season, she led
the CAA in scoring with 61 goals and 13 assists. A first team All-CAA
pick, she also earned first team all-region accolades.
During
her sophomore season, Witzel led the nation with a 3.74 goals per game
average while her 4.42 points per game ranked sixth in NCAA Division I.
She set the Towson
single-season record by scoring 71 goals, shattering the previous mark
which had been held for 21 years. Witzel led the Tigers to the CAA
Championship by scoring seven goals in the championship game against
Hofstra and was named as the Most Outstanding Performer of the
tournament.
As a freshman, Witzel was named as Towson’s
Female Rookie of the Year after setting program records for goals (44)
and points (53) by a freshman. She ranked fourth in the CAA by
averaging 2.44 goals per game and ranked sixth with a 2.94 points per
game average.
A psychology and sports studies major, she is the daughter of Barry and Terry Witzel.
