Winners of Towson's first national championship in any sport, the 1969 women's gymnastics team was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1992.
In just their second season as a program, the Tigers and Hall of Fame Head Coach
George McGinty finished the season as the AIAW Division II national champions. Towson also recorded its first winning season in 1968-69. In his 14 seasons as head coach, McGinty recorded a 104-51 mark and guided the Tigers to two fourth-place, one sixth-place and one 12th-place finish in the AIAW in addition to the title.
The season began with a 1.0 point victory over Southern Connecticut (76.75-75.75), and also featured victories over Penn State (77.98-55.45) and West Chester (70.42-66.35). The Tigers finished the year fourth at the Eastern Championships.
At the national championship meet, team captain
Dorothy (Crocker) Hyman finished 10th in the vault and went on to become, along with teammate
Candi (Normile) Klopp, the first gymnasts inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame. Klopp finished eighth in the all-around competition and became the first Tiger gymnast to earn All-America honors (1969).
