The 1954, 1955, and 1956 Men's Soccer teams

The 1954, 1955, and 1956 men’s soccer teams, which posted a three-year record of 21-3-3 were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.

These teams went 20 conference games without a loss and propelled Towson Teachers College into the elite soccer teams in the region. During this great run were notable victories over undefeated ACC Conference leader University of Virginia in 1954 and Mason-Dixon conference powers Baltimore University and Catholic University.

In 1956, the Tigers (then the Golden Knights) recorded a win over top 10 rival Drexel. During this period, the team won or tied six practice games with two national powers of the era: U.S. Naval Academy and Howard University.

Several players earned All-America, All-South and All-Mason-Dixon conference honors. Three were invited to the United States Olympic trials. The coach, legendary Donald "Doc" Minnegan, was later enshrined in the National Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame. On the 1955 team, 10 members of the squad have inducted into the Towson University’s Athletic Hall of Fame for athletic excellence in not just soccer but also basketball, baseball, track, and wrestling in some cases.

During this era “Doc” Minnegan constantly referred to these teams as "his tigers." By 1956, the words “Tiger Soccer” meant something special to the student body. During this era, the seeds were sown to change the Towson mascot from the Golden Knights to the Tigers.
