Mickey Williard is entering his third season as the volunteer assistant coach at Towson University in 2019.
He works with the infielders and baserunners and serves as the team’s first base coach. Williard also assists with hitting, serves as the head for placement of players with summer leagues plus coordinates team meals on the road and camps.
The 2019 saw the Tigers finish third in the CAA in double plays turned with 40, the second year in a row where Towson was in the top-three in that category.
In his first season in 2018, Towson's defense vastly improved from the previous year, decreasing the amount of team errors by 16 plus being second in the CAA in double plays turned. Shortstop Richie Palacios was drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Indians while second baseman Dirk Masters, made only two errors in 209 opportunities.
Williard joined the Tigers after spending the previous three years as the head coach at Westchester Country Day School in his hometown of High Point, North Carolina.
During his tenure, Williard led the Wildcats to the state semifinals all three seasons, including a state runner-up finish in 2016. His teams reached a No. 1 ranking his first two seasons, and climbed as high as No. 3 in 2017.
Williard guided WCDS to a school-record 23 wins during the 2016 season, just one season after losing only three games.
He made an immediate impact in his first season as the team set new school records with a 1.66 team ERA and a .982 fielding percentage. During his three seasons as head coach, Williard helped produce eight all-state selections, 17 all-conference award winners and had eight players go on to play collegiately, including three Division I commits.
In the summer of 2017, Williard served as the hitting coach for the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plains League. The Salamanders ranked second in the league with 98 doubles and 58 home runs. The team also boasted the second highest fielding percentage.
Prior to his time at WCDS, Williard served as a student assistant at High Point from 2013-14, specializing in hitting and infield defense.
He played collegiately at Pfeiffer University and Guilford College before finishing his degree in political science at HPU. Williard was accepted into two of the top 30 law schools before ultimately deciding to pursue coaching full-time.
He was a two-time all-conference selection as a prep at WCDS, helping lead the Wildcats to their first championship appearance in 2010. He is still tied for the school record for fewest errors in a season by an infielder.
