The 2022 season will be Jason Mulder’s fourth as Towson’s assistant coach.
Jason Mulder joined the Towson University field hockey staff in January 2019 as a full-time assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant in 2018.
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Tigers did not play a fall 2020 schedule and instead postponed their season to a shortened spring 2021 slate.
Mulder helped lead the Tigers to the most wins since 2011, going 4-13, including winning their second conference game since 2011. The fall 2021 squad had two CAA Preseason Team award winners in Lena Vandam and Kaiya Townsend Sabur. Lena Vandam was the fourth Tiger to be named All-CAA first team and Kasey Bubel was the 16th to be awarded All-CAA second team.
In the spring 2021 season, Mulder helped the team to two wins, including a historic win at Northeastern. The victory marked the first in program history on the Huskies’ turf. It was also the team’s first win against Northeastern since 2011. The 3-1 victory signified the Tigers’ first CAA win since 2011 and first conference win on the road since 2010. In postseason accolades, Mulder saw three student-athletes receive All-CAA selections, including a Defesnive Player of the Year selection for goalkeeper Lena Vandam.
At the start of April 2021, Mulder was named the head coach of the Senior U.S. Men's National Indoor Team field hockey team. He will lead the team in the 2021 Indoor Pan American Cup located in Spring City, Pa.
In 2019 he helped guide the Tigers to three wins at home. Mulder's coaching helped land three Tigers on postseason All-CAA teams. He also saw history as Towson played Miami (OH) in the first ever Division I field hockey game played in the state of Texas in October.
Mulder hails from Cape Town, South Africa and began his coaching career in 2009 at Central Hockey Club. Most recently he was a volunteer assistant at Syracuse, Bryant and Maryland before joining the Tigers.
In South Africa he was the head of hockey at Western Cape Sports School where he developed players for national programs before moving on to become the Technical Director at Diocesans College in Cape Town. While working at Bishop's he was responsible for the development of their field hockey program from ages 6 to 18. As a head coach he led his team to two league titles and two regional titles in 2013 and 2014.
From 2013-16 he coached the state Western Province boy's U19 team to three three consecutive national championships. Mulder is not short of international experience, from 2015-17 he served as the head coach of the South African U17 team and served as one of the South African men's team assistant coaches and technical analysts.
Mulder pursued coaching science at ETA College in South Africa with a concentration in coaching hockey, and he is also a qualified level 2 coach and level 1 coach facilitator. To add to his field hockey experience Mulder was also the Chief Operating Officer of Sportways SA, the biggest field hockey coaching company in the world.
He is married to Kati Nearhouse who pursues a career in education.
