Joe Tricario

A veteran coach of over 30 years, Joe Tricario enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at Towson.  He works with the safeties, while also serving as the special teams coordinator.

In his first three seasons with the Tigers, Tricario has produced a pair of All-CAA punt returns, an two All-CAA safeties and an All-American punt returner.

Senior Donnell Lewis earned two honors from the CAA in 2015 as he was honored as a defensive back and a punt returner.  It marked the second-straight season was honored as a punt returner.

Also in 2015, freshman Lyrics Klugh set a new school-record with 211 kickoff return yards against James Madison.  He broke a record that stood for 25 years.

In 2014, the Tigers led the CAA in punt return average, while ranking fifth in kickoff return average.  

Senior Derrick Joseph became the first All-American selection as a punt returner after averaging 18.4 yards per return.  He was selected as a Fourth-Team All-American by Beyond Sports Network.

Joseph put his name atop the record books in the 2013 season as he became just the second Tiger in school history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns during the season.

The safeties also made plays throughout the season as they combined to intercept 11 passes and force four fumbles.  Lewis was the leader of the group as he intercepted four passes, while also forcing four fumbles.  

Tricario came to Towson after spending the 2011 season coaching the linebackers, and serving as special teams coordinator, at Massachusetts.  In his one season with the Minutemen, Tricario helped to mentor All-American linebacker Tyler Holmes.

Tricario went to UMass after spending five years as an assistant coach Stony Brook.  He was the defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator for Seawolves, helping them earn back-to-back Big South Conference championships.  He was also instrumental in Tyler Santucci earning All-American recognition.

Tricario arrived at Fordham in 1999 as the special teams coordinator and was part of the Rams dramatic turnaround from a winless team to a conference champion.

He was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2002 and helped to complete the turnaround.  In his first year leading the defense, the Rams posted a 10-3 record and captured the Patriot League championship.  

Tricario joined the coaching ranks in 1985 as a graduate assistant at Albany.  After one season, he would become an assistant coach with the  quarterbacks and wide receivers.  In his first season with the Great Danes, he helped the team post a 9-2 record and win the ECAC Bowl by defeating Plymouth State.  

Following the 1989 season, Tricario went north to become the wide receivers coach with the Montreal Machine in the inaugural season of the World League of American Football (WLAF).  

With the WLAF played during the spring, Tricario was able to spend the 1991 season as an assistant coach at Union College.  In his lone season, he helped the Dutchmen finish 10-1 and earn a sport in the NCAA Division III semifinals.

Tricario spent the 1992-93 seasons as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Penn.  He helped to guide the Quakers to a 17-3 mark, including the 1993 Ivy League championship.

He made his first stop at Fordham for the 1994 season, before leaving the college ranks to work with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 1995.

He returned to college in 1996 and spent three years as an assistant coach at Lafayette, coaching the wide receivers and special teams.

Tricario is a 1983 graduate of the State University of New York Cortland where he played wide receiver for the Red Dragons.
