Former Davidson standout Tyler Phelps enters his first season as the tight ends coach for Towson.
Phelps came to Towson after two seasons at the University of West Florida (UWF), being a quarterbacks coach while also being a video coordinator and academic coordinator. He helped UWF to 15 victories and a 2023 DII playoff berth and mentored Peewee Jarrett to be the first UWF quarterback to earn over 5,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards. Other duties included leading quarterback meetings, weekly wristband creation, weekly film creation/breakdown and scouting.
Before going into coaching, Phelps was an investment banking analyst for Bank of America Securities, Inc. from 2021-2023.
Formerly recruited by Pete Shinnick at UWF, Phelps was a four-year starting quarterback at Davidson College, leading the Wildcats to its first-ever Pioneer Football League (PFL) title and FCS Playoff berth in spring 2021. In 40 games played, the two-time All-PFL honoree passed for 4,635 yards and 34 passing touchdowns, helping Davidson be the top scoring offense in FCS plus leading FCS in total offense in 2018. In high school, he started three years at quarterback at Gulf Breeze, leading the team to the program's first district championship since 1989.
Phelps graduated from Davidson in 2021 with a degree in economics. Her earned his Master's Degree at West Florida in 2024 in sports performance and coaching.
