Formerly associated with the Northeastern University based Center for the Study of Sport in Society, Antwaine Smith is Towson's first Director of the TOTAL TIGER Life Skills and Leadership Program.
Antwaine's duties include developing and leading the athletics department's community service and outreach initiatives. The objective of this program is to broaden and enrich the student-athletes' collegiate experience, assist them in making good choices and prepare them for the future.
"Antwaine's experience as an educator, former college and professional athlete, and as a difference maker with inner city youth in Baltimore make him the perfect choice to lead our TOTAL TIGER program," says Tiger Director of Athletics, Mike Waddell. "He's a self-starter who will make every aspect of our athletics program stronger."
Antwaine comes to Towson from the East Baltimore's Franciscan Youth Center where he was its Executive Director for two years. In 2001, he joined the Center for the Study of Sports in Society as Senior Outreach/Training Specialist and Program Coordinator. He had various director roles until 2005 when he was named the Sport in Society's Regional Manager in Baltimore. His area of expertise has been creating, developing and delivering programming to athletes and youth around the topics of diversity, conflict resolution, leadership and life skills.
During his career he has served as a Senior Training Consultant for the Mentors in Violence Prevention National program. In that capacity he has delivered violence prevention trainings for various athletics organizations, including the Baltimore Ravens, the New England Patriots, the Florida Gators football team, the LSU men's athletic teams, the Kentucky Wildcats' varsity teams, Northeastern's football team and the men's athletic teams at Millersville University.
A native of Baltimore who attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Smith graduated from Northeastern in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in Cardiopulmonary Sciences. A defensive back, he played football for the Huskies (1992-95) and was team captain. He spent one year with the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts.
