Biography

Supervising Towson’s Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning programs is the responsibility of James Shipp who joined the Tiger staff as an Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance in 2010 after two years as a collegiate advisor for Trustway TEAM Services and Vice-President of the Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation.

Shipp works with the men's basketball and men's and women's golf teams at Towson.

A member of the athletics staff at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from 1998 to 2009, Shipp spent two years working with colleges and universities to improve the business aspects of their sports medicine departments prior to his Towson assigment. This was accomplished by reviewing policy and procedure, implementing customized risk management and cost containment plans and creating and implementing business plans for revenue generation.

As Vice-President of CSMF, he worked to improve the day-to-day performance of collegiate athletics trainers by providing educational programming to trainers and administrators on a myriad of topics, including athletics insurance, human resource management and risk management.

A 1995 graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Shipp earned his B.A. degree in Physical Education with a minor in Chemistry. In 1998, he earned his Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama Birmingham.

During his undergraduate years at Chapel Hill, Shipp was an athletics training student for the North Carolina football team, working with the Tar Heels from 1993 to 1995. He also worked as an athletics trainer for the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

While earning his Master's degree at UAB, Shipp was a graduate assistant athletics trainer who was assigned to the Blazers' football and track and field teams.

In 1998, he joined the staff at UNC Greensboro where from 1998 to 2001, he served as the assistant athletics trainer who worked with the Spartans' men's soccer and men's basketball programs.

In 2001, he was named as the head athletics trainer at UNCG, a position he held for three years. He was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Student Welfare/Head Athletics Trainer in 2004. During his tenure as Assistant A.D., Shipp assembled a comprehensive athletic performance team which consisted of athletic trainers, speed, strength and conditioning coaches, sports psychologists, a sports dietician, a team chiropractor, and team physicians.

In addition to the athletic performance oversight, he managed the Spartan CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) Program while serving as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics (SACIA).

Shipp is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association.
