Biography

An All-American defensive back for the Tiger football team in the early 1980s, Gary Rubeling '85 was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1995.

He was a three-year starter in the Tigers’ defensive backfield as a free safety.

As a senior in 1983, Rubeling was a co-captain of the Tigers’ nationally ranked team that posted a 10-1 record. The defensive unit led NCAA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 5.8 points per game. The 1983 Tigers made their first NCAA Division II playoff appearance, losing to eventual national champion North Dakota State. They also won the Lambert Plaque as the top Division II team in the East.

The Walkersville, Md., native led the nation with a school-record 13 interceptions as a senior when he earned first team All-America honors from Kodak and the Associated Press. His 25 career interceptions are a Towson record and still rank him among the NCAA all-time Division II leaders.

An honorable mention Academic All-American as a senior, Rubeling made 179 tackles in his career. Honored as Towson’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1983-84, he also holds the Towson record of three interceptions in one game. He accomplished that feat three times, in three of Towson’s biggest wins.

He is the nephew of the late Al Rubeling ’32, another Towson Hall of Famer.
