Biography

After 39 seasons with the Towson football program, Gordy Combs '72 was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 2011.

Combs started for three years as a linebacker and served as team captain as a senior before spending 19 years as an assistant coach at Towson and 17 years as the head coach.

As a player, he earned All-Mason-Dixon Conference accolades as a junior and senior and led the Tigers with 106 tackles as a senior.

As a coach, he helped Tigers post a 10-0 record in his second season as a member of the  staff. Combs served as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator from 1982 to 1991; his 1983 defense led NCAA Division II in scoring defense and turnover ratio (+27). His 1984 and 1986 Tigers reached NCAA Division II playoffs.

Combs became Tigers’ third head football coach in 1992 and led Tigers to 8-2 records and NCAA Division I-AA national rankings in 1993 and 1994. He coached the Tigers to nine winning records and two .500 seasons in his 17 years as head coach. Overall, Combs compiled a 92-90 record as the Tigers’ head coach. He was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 1999 and received the Towson University Coach of the Year award for men’s sports five times.
