Biography

2007-08 SEASON: Debuted as a Towson player with a career high 26 points and 21 rebounds in the Tigers’ season opening 83-69 win over Loyola ... it was his first college career start ... named CAA Player of the Week for that effort ... went on to lead the Tigers in points scored (360), rebounding (8.9) and blocks (50) for the season ... suffered a hip pointer in the 17th game of the season at William & Mary and never fully recovered the rest of the way ... he averaged 13.7 ppg and 10.6 rpg until his injury ... afterwards his numbers dropped to 9.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg in the final 14 games ... recorded 9 doubles-doubles ... registered 8 of them in the first 13 games ... got just one more in the final 14 outings, that came, ironically, against William & Mary in the 27th game of the season when he tallied a game high 21 points and collected 11 boards in the rematch in the Towson Center ... did not start the final 3 games of the season because of a back injury that kept him completely out of the regular season finale against Delaware ... Junior led the CAA in rebounding most of the season and was among the top 5 nationally during that time too ... he finished third in the conference and 41st nationally ... his 268 rebounds are the most in a single season for a Division I player at Towson and the most since Brian Matthews collected 334 during Towson’s Division II, Mason-Dixon Conference 26-4 campaign in 1977-78 ... scored double figures in 21 games ... Georgia State held him to a season low 2 points (made free throws) and 1 rebound while he tried to play through a back injury ... matched his rebounding career high with 21 in the 75-72 win over Niagara ... Junior joined former Navy All-American David Robinson as the only CAA players ever to grab 21 or more rebounds in multiple games in a single season ... tallied 25 points to lead the Tigers to a 77-71 victory over Northeastern ... blocked 3 shots in the 73-64 win over James Madison when the Tigers recorded a season high 10 team blocks and later recorded a career high 5 blocks in the 60-51 win over Hofstra to mark his best defensive effort of the season ... gad a team high 19 points and 15 rebounds at Vermont ... Towson’s leading scorer seven times and leading rebounder 21 times ... second on the squad to Josh Thornton in field goal percentage with a .452 clip.

AT THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: Was a reserve for the Cougars for two years ... appeared in 50 games, averaging 9.2 minutes per game ... did not play against the Tigers in 2005-06 but had a team high 9 rebounds, with 2 points, in 6 minutes against Towson in the Cougars' 78-58 win in the Towson Center in 2004-05 ... scored a career high 10 points against Auburn in 2004 ... that was the only double digit game for him in his freshman and sophomore years ... collected a then career high 12 rebounds against Coastal Carolina in 2004 also.  

 

AT WEST ROWAN H.S: Played four years of varsity basketball ... scored his career high of 55 points in his freshman year ... scored 1,870 points over his high school career and grabbed 1,000 rebounds ... the Falcons were a perfect 61-0 in his final two years, winning back-to-back North Carolina state championships ... MVP of the 2002-03 AAA state championship game and of the Western Regionals ... Rowan County Player of the Year that season ... runner up for the North Carolina AAA Mr. Basketball award in 2002-03 ... a second team All-State choice too ... twice named to the Sam Moir Christmas All-Tournament team ... attended prep school for a year before enrolling at Charleston.

 

BACKGROUND/PERSONAL: Surname is James Matthew Hairston, Jr., prefers “Junior” ... volunteers at his local Boys & Girls Club where he also counsels high school age students on what to expect at the college level ... Junior is the son of Mack Hairston ... his mother, Gigi Vinson, is deceased ... cites his mother as the person he admires the most and the reason he’s in college “I promised her I would earn my degree and that’s what I’m going to do,” says Junior ... he would like to continue his basketball career after college but if that plan doesn’t develop, he’ll join his uncles’ business which is operating a children’s home for juveniles ... son of Mac Hairston ... Junior is a Criminal Justice Major.
