Andy Shilling

Shilling enters his tenth season with the team, being promoted to assistant coach in 2024.  He served as the volunteer assistant coach the previous seven years and works closely with the team's goalkeepers and offense since 2017 and took over the extra-man unit in 2019.

In 2025, he assisted Towson to win its second straight CAA Tournament and undefeated CAA regular season.  Towson's man-up offense ranked 14th in the NCAA at 43.8%, including six players having at least three man-up goals on the year.

In his first year as an assistant coach, he helped Towson win its first CAA Tournament since 2019 and first CAA undefeated regular season since 2004.  In his first year starting in goal, Luke Downs earned All-CAA Second Team recognition, being fifth in the nation with a 9.40 goals allowed average, anchoring down a scoring defense which allowed 9.12 goals per game, second in DI.  Two players, Mikey Weisshaar and Alex Roussel, were in the top-16 in DI in man-up goals scored.

The 2023 season saw Evan Long earn All-CAA Second Team in his first season as the starting goalkeeper, finishing second in the league with a 52% save rate.  Long was a two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Week and had a pair of 20-save games, the first 20-save games for a Towson goalkeeper since 2013, including one against No. 1 Virginia.

Over the course of his time with the Tigers, Towson's netminders have earned top honors in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), including Shane Brennan, who was named CAA All-Rookie, Second Team All-CAA and First Team All-CAA in the 2022 season, all while overcoming various injuries. Over the course of the 2022 season, Brennan finished inside the top 30 in two national statistic categories: Saves per game (12.69, 22nd) and save percentage (.525, 29th). Brennan graduates with the ninth-most saves for a Tiger, stopping 506 over his six years of play.

In 2022, Shilling had the unique opportunity to coach one of his sons, Luke, who played with the Tigers for a fifth year after graduating from Johns Hopkins University, earning a place on the CAA All-Tournament Team, being a co-CAA Player of the Week (March 7) and being 10th in DI in shooting percentage.  As the extra-man offense coach, Towson ranked 24th in DI in extra-man, including James Avanzato being fifth in the country with nine man-up goals.

Additionally, Shilling's youngest son, Ely, worked game days on the field and in the press box as a student-intern with the University' athletic media relations team.

During the 2019 season, Shilling coached Towson's strong goaltending group to the program's sixth CAA Championship, backed by 6-foot, 6-inch Tyler Canto, who was named to the CAA All-Tournament team and was selected to the USILA Team of the Week in March. Canto earned CAA Player of the Week plaudits as he helped the Tigers host a first round game of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. In addition to working with the goalies, Shilling coached the Tigers extra-man unit, which finished seventh in the nation in efficiency, converting on 44.1 percent of the man-up chances, also being part of the 17th-ranked scoring offense in the country.

In his second season (2018) with the program Shilling once again worked with the goalies, grooming rookie netminder Shane Brennan to a CAA All-Rookie selection and several weekly honors. Brennan made his first appearance against Johns Hopkins, becoming the first freshman goalie in the program's CAA era to start in his first collegiate game. That season, Towson reached the CAA Championship game for a fourth-straight year.

Shilling has helped build Towson's goalie corps, working with the unit as he coached Josh Miller and Matt Hoy to an NCAA Final Four appearance in his first season in 2017. The Tigers captured the CAA title that season, with Hoy earning the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player honors. Additionally, Shilling helped run the substitution box.

Prior to joining the Tigers, Shilling was the assistant varsity lacrosse coach at nearby Boys’ Latin School from 2013-16. From 2010-14, Shilling was the co-head coach of the Lakers’ junior varsity squad. While at Boys’ Latin, Shilling saw the program win the MIAA and National Championship in 2014 and win the 2013 JV MIAA Championship.

In addition to his Towson duties, Shilling works closely with several youth programs and is the program director/event coordinator for the B’More Lax Co. From 2001-08, he served as the commissioner and coach of Cockeysville Lacrosse.

Shilling played collegiately for Division III powerhouse Salisbury University in 1990 and 1991, helping lead the Gulls to a runner-up finish against then-DIII force Hobart in 1991. From 1991-93, Shilling played club lacrosse for the MLC Club. Shilling carries a bachelor's degree in communications.
