In December of 2020, coach Mike Jackson announced that Tyler Burdorff has been hired as the assistant coach for the Towson University track and field team. Burdorff serves as the team's throwing coach.
Burdorff had an impressive first season with the Tigers, guiding many student-athletes to success. He helped Lauren Coleman set the new outdoor program record in the shot put (16.23m). He also oversaw Kayla Thorpe set new freshman records in both the indoor and outdoor shot put as well as the javelin in which she also ranks second all-time in program history. Under Burdorff's supervision, Fatimah Owens set the freshman standard in discus.
Burdorff assisted as Coleman (hammer and shot put) and Thorpe (javelin) both qualified for the NCAA Division I East preliminary round. He also coached Coleman to both ECAC and CAA Championship wins in the shot put in addition to second place finishes for Thorpe (shot put and javelin) and Debbie Gnoumou (heptathlon).
Prior to Towson, Burdorff was an assistant coach at Ithaca College. While at Ithaca, Burdorff was also the Assistant Coordinator of Facilities, Events, and Equipment.
In 3 years coaching the throws at Ithaca, Burdorff coached 1 National Champion, 4 All Americans, and a total of 20 conference champions. He also assisted with the training of the multi’s, coaching 1 All American and 3 conference champions. Burdorff spent the 2018 season working with Cornell University as a volunteer assistant, where he coached an NCAA qualifier and 2 Ivy League Champions in the throws. Burdorff assisted in the breaking of 5 school records, 4 at Ithaca and 1 at Cornell.
In 2017, Burdorff was a staff member on two National Runner-Up teams when the Ithaca women finished 2
nd at the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships.
As Assistant Coordinator of Facilities, Events, and Equipment, Burdorff assisted in facility management of the Athletics & Events Center and Higgins Stadium. He managed the daily equipment and game operations of 14 of Ithaca’s varsity sports.
Coach Burdorff is a 2016 graduate of Baldwin Wallace University, where he majored in Exercise Science and Pre-Physical Therapy. While at BW, Burdorff competed in football and track & field from 2012-16. Burdorff was a three-year starter at linebacker for the football team, was a team captain, and the Ray E. Watts Defensive Player of the Year his senior year.
Burdorff was a very accomplished student-athlete at Baldwin Wallace. His senior year, he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and the Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year by USTFCCCA. He was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American in the hammer and weight throw, after finishing as NCAA Runner-up in both events in 2016. Burdorff was also a four-time Ohio Athletic Conference Champion, garnering a total of 11 All-OAC honors in his career.
Burdorff obtained his M.S. in Human Performance from Ithaca College in 2018. He holds a USATF Level I Certification as well as a Throws Event Specialist Certification and Strength & Conditioning Certification from the USTFCCCA.
