Towson University cross country and track and field head coach
Mike Jackson announced that
Henry Phelan has joined his staff as an assistant coach in July of 2017.
Phelan comes to Towson from Harvard University where he served as an assistant coach for the cross country and track teams. There he helped the Crimson secure the first Triple Crown in program history as Harvard won the Ivy League Championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.
Prior to his time at Harvard, Phelan was the head coach at Lincoln-Sudbury High School and Bromfield High School in Massachusetts.
He led Lincoln-Sudbury to a NXN Northeastern Regional Championship in cross country in 2008 and a 12
th place finish at the NXN National Championship. Phelan coached five state champion cross country teams and eight individual state champions in his 17 year high school coaching career. He guided eight indoor track state championship teams.
In indoor and outdoor track he coached a combined 11 high school All-Americans and 11 All-America relay teams. In 2003,
Ari Lambie set the high school indoor national record in the 1,000 meters and in 2002 his 4x800m indoor relay team was named the national champions.
During the 2003 spring season he coached Lambie to a national title in the mile. Phelan also guided
Emily Jones to a runner-up finish in the two mile in 2008 and
Ariel Keklak to a second place finish in the mile in 2015.
Phelan was twice named the Boston Globe Girls Coach of the Year and was the USATF Girls Northeast Regional Outdoor Track Coach of the Year in 2011.
Phelan was a member of the cross country team at Keene State, where he earned All-America recognition.
He is a USA Track & Field Level II certified coach in endurance, sprints, hurdles and relays. He also holds a USTFCCCA certification in strength and conditioning.
