A member of the Towson University men’s golf team from 2001-05, Larkin was named the 11th head coach in program history on May 15, 2017.
The 2023-2024 crew was a young team, as six of the nine players were freshman. The Tigers saw two third place finishes at the Lehigh and Southern Invitational. At Lehigh's tournament in October, Brad Riley led the team with a 12th place finish after two rounds of 73 and 76. During the Southern Invitational, three Tigers shot 69's. Freshman Michael Matheson led the Tigers, tying for fifth overall after rounds of 71, 69 and 71. Brad Riley and Sky Aung carded 69's as well, finishing in eighth and 12th respectively. Aung went on to shoot the team's lowest 18 hole score for the season at CAA Championships, firing a 68 (-4) during his final round.
The team saw six top-5 finishes during the 2022-23 slate, with its top performance coming from the Hartford Hawk Invitational where the Tigers were the runner-up behind UCF with a final score of 857. Julian Gonzalez was the top finisher, tying for eighth overall. Gonzalez fired a career low 66 during his second round as the only Towson golfer under 70 during the tournament. The graduate student was named CAA Golfer of the Week following the tournament. At the Southern Invitational the team placed third out of 11 teams, only seven strokes behind first place. Four Tigers placing in the top-25 individually with Jeremy Summerson claiming the top spot for the team, placing third overall after carding 67-68-75. Summerson earned Towson's second CAA Weekly Award following the tournament.
In the 2021-22 campaign, Larkin helped push the Tigers back to forefront of golf in the Mid-Atlantic Region, seeing the Tigers capture first in the eight-team field at the Towson Invitational, hosted at Prospect Bay Country Club on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Later in the spring, Towson won the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia. Towson won the second event by eight strokes (882) over second-place Georgetown. It marked the first time since the 2015 season the Tigers won multiple team titles in the same season.
During the 2020 fall semester, the Towson men’s golf team had the highest GPA among men's programs with a 3.411 and has the highest cumulative men's GPA at 3.390. Derek Gold earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, while Jeremy Summerson (3.976), Julian Gonzalez (3.85), Branden Nguyen (3.8) and Justin Griffith (3.55) all earned Dean’s List honors.
Larkin played in 42 career tournaments for the Tigers, which included appearances at two NCAA Regional Championships (2004, 2005). He won the 2002 Towson Fall Invitational, was named to the Ping Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team (2005), as well as an ESPN Academic All-American (Second Team 2005) and twice the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Scholar Athlete of the Year for Men’s Golf (2004, 2005).”
One of the top golfers in program history, Larkin currently ranks sixth in all-time scoring average for the Tigers (75.05), improving his scoring average in each year of his career. He also ranks fifth in career birdies (234) and fourth in career rounds played (102).
During the 2005 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf East Regionals, Larkin finished ahead of both PGA Tour standouts Kevin Kisner and Luke List. Playing as the No. 3 player for Towson behind Hall of Famers Billy Wingerd and Jeff Castle, he shot rounds of 71-73-72 for a three-over par 216 to finish in a tie for 48th place, beating Kisner (Georgia) by a stroke and List (Vanderbilt) by two. Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson, the former No. 1 ranked player in the world, won the event, shooting 15-under. The field also included PGA Tour standouts Webb Simpson (Wake Forest), Brendon Todd (Georgia) and Jeff Overton (Indiana).
Larkin graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2005 with a BS in Economics. He spent time playing various professional tours as well as working as a golf professional in the Metropolitan Section PGA in New York. His top finishes in the Met area include a victory on the Met PGA Assistant’s Tour, t-3 at the Met PGA Assistant’s Championship, t-6th at the Met Open and t-11th at both the Westchester Open and New York State Open.
Nationally, he has twice been medalist at U.S. Open Local Qualifying (2012, 2015), and has competed in the PGA National Assistants Championship (2007, 2008) as well as PGA Tour Qualifying School (2009).
Larkin has coached all levels of players including beginners, high school and college golfers, touring professionals, and even a major championship winner. He has trained with the renowned co-founders of Vision54, Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott, who say “We so enjoy being with Mike and his deep knowledge about golf, curiosity to keep on learning and his sincere care for the golfers he supports.” Immediately prior to being named head coach at Towson, Larkin was an assistant golf professional at The Golf Club of Purchase in New York.
