A key contributor on the sidelines during the Towson University women's lacrosse last three Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, Michael Molster coaches the Tigers defense and goalies.
Under Molster's guidance, the Towson defense has been among the best in the country, ranking in the top 10 nationally over the last three years in both goals against average and caused turnovers. In 2018, Molster's defense held 10 teams to in single digits goals as the team won 16 games. In 2017, the defensive unit held 11 teams to single digit goals en route to a 9.36 goals against average.
In each of the last two seasons, the Tigers have set program records for team caused turnovers, forcing 216 in 2017 before resetting that mark in 2018 with 232, leading the CAA in that category in those same seasons.
Molster has coached three Tigers to All-America mentions: Olivia Conti (2018 First Team IWLCA and Second Team Inside Lacrosse, 2017 Second Team IWLCA ), Tiana Wallpher (2018 Third Team IWLCA, Honorable Mention Inside Lacrosse) and Sami Chenoweth (2018 Honorable Mention Inside Lacrosse). In 2018, then-sophomore Kiley Keating earned IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team plaudits as a goalie.
Additionally, Molster mentored Conti to back-to-back CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors, 2017 and 2018, in her freshman and sophomore seasons. Over the course of his career at Towson, Molster has coached nine Mid-Atlantic All-Region selections and eight All-CAA defenders.
Away from Towson, Molster currently serves as the defensive assistant coach for the England Senior National Team leading up to the 2021 World Cup, to be hosted at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. He will run the England defense and goalies over the next three years. Prior to this round of World Cup preparations, Molster has served as an assistant coach for the English U19 team, which took bronze at the 2015 World Cup.
In 2016, Molster proved to be a valuable asset for Kelsea Donnelly, who ranked among the national leaders for goals-against-average and save percentage. Donnelly was invited to tryout for the U.S. National team twice after working with Molster and was a WPLL All-Star this past summer. The success for Tiger goalies under Molster's watch continued in 2017 with freshman Angie Benson. Benson, who ranked among the Top 10 in the nation for goals against average was named the IWLCA National Player of the Week in April. She held 16 of her 20 opponents to single-digits on the scoreboard.
Molster began his coaching career at Chesapeake High School in 1995 where he was an assistant for the men's lacrosse team. Over the next 10 years, he had coaching stints at Broadneck and Severna Park High Schools.
In 2005, Molster moved to coaching women's lacrosse at South River High School. After a successful tenure at South River, Molster rose to the collegiate level and spent three years as the volunteer assistant coach for the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team. At Hopkins, he coached goalie Cosette Larash to All-American Lacrosse Conference honors.
Molster and his wife, Julie, live in Columbia, Md. They have one son, Alex.
