Mike Gathagan joined the Towson University athletics department as Senior Associate Athletic Director, Communications in October 2018.  He provides oversight of communications departments with supervision of sports information, video services and fan development. He is the liaison with FloSports and serves as sport administrator for men's lacrosse and volleyball. He previously served as the oversight for the men's golf (spring 2019-spring 2025), tennis (spring 2022) and women's golf (spring 2025) programs.

During this tenure, Gathagan secured a muti-year broadcast partnership with Monumental Sports Network. Beginning in 2022-23, five Towson programs (men’s basketball, football, women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s lacrosse) had games air on the regional channel that reaches more than 4.7 million households in the Mid-Atlantic region– helping raise the profile of Towson Athletics.

Gathagan, a Towson alumnus, returned to campus as a long-standing member of communications in the Baltimore-Washington region, including 14 years with the Maryland Jockey Club (2001-2015), where he served as Vice President of Communications. He was the spokesperson for the Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, while also managing the media relations and broadcasting departments for both Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park.

Gathagan’s career also includes stops in media relations for the NBA's Washington Wizards (1996-99) and the Canadian Football League’s Baltimore Stallions (1994-96).

In addition, he was an award-winning sports producer for Baltimore’s WMAR-TV (1986-94). Immediately prior to Towson, he was the communications director at the Maryland Catholic Conference (2015-2018).

Gathagan graduated from Towson in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication.  He formerly was an executive board member of the Brigance Brigade Foundation.
