Spiro Morekas has been the play-by-play voice of Towson University football, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse since 1991. He also hosts weekly coaches shows during the seasons with Pat Skerry, Shawn Nadelen and Pete Shinnick. Spiro and Cornell’s Barry Leonard are the only broadcasters currently calling Division I football, basketball and lacrosse games.
Morekas broadcasts approximately 50 games each academic year and has called games at 143 schools while at Towson.
He celebrated his 1,000
th broadcast with Towson on December 29, 2010 in Philadelphia when the men’s basketball team defeated La Salle 93-90 in overtime. During his tenure, Morekas has also called play-by-play action for Towson’s women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse teams.

Morekas is joined in the broadcast booth by Towson Athletics Hall of Famers in two of the three sports:
- Former head coach Gordy Combs has been the football analyst since 2014.
- Glenn Smith, Towson’s all-time goal scorer, is in his second stint as the lacrosse analyst. He was with Morekas from 1992 through 2005 and returned in 2019.
A 1983 Towson University graduate, Morekas was the sports director for WCVT, the university radio station as a student.
Spiro served as sports director at WSBY radio in Salisbury, Md. from 1985 to 1988 where he launched his play-by-play career, calling football and men’s basketball games at Salisbury State University for two seasons beginning in 1985-86.
In 1988, he returned to the Baltimore metropolitan area as sports director at WGRX radio, serving in that capacity until 1990. He then became involved in sports talk radio - hosting radio shows on WCBM (1990-91), WITH (1991-96), WWLG (1996-98) and WNST (1998-2002).
In 1988-89, he began a two-year stint as the play-by-play announcer for Loyola College (now University) basketball before signing on with his alma mater.
Morekas has a long affiliation with Towson University, serving as men’s golf coach (1989-94) and was an adjunct faculty member during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 academic years, teaching a sports broadcasting class.
In 2005, Spiro was honored with its Doc Minnegan Award, recognizing his contributions to Towson University athletics.
