Tigers Open Season With Dual Victories

TOWSON, Md. - Using a complete team effort, the Tiger women's swimming and diving team opened defense of its Colonial Athletic Association championship with a pair of victories in the season opener at Burdick Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated Howard by a 167-63 margin while posting a 148-104 decision over C.W. Post.

C.W. Post defeated Howard by a 151-98 margin in the double dual meet.

After posting a victory in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet, the Tigers got a first place finish from junior Ashley Gidzinski in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:42.18. The Tigers took the top three spots in the event as junior Amy Morlock and freshman Kristen McCandless finished in second and third place, respectively.

Freshman Veronica Feltrin won the first individual event of her college career by taking the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.68 while freshman Vanessa Reyes and junior Sabrina Warren followed to complete the sweep for the Tigers. Feltrin also finished in second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.31.

Senior Melissa Otterbein won the 200-yard butterfly for the Tigers, touching the wall in 2:09.50 while sophomore Chelsea Kling was second in the event with a mark of 2:10.63. Senior Lauren Entler followed in third place with a time of 2:10.76.

Competing in her first college meet, freshman Caroline Baker led a strong Tiger contingent in the one-meter diving event by scoring 175.75 points to earn first place. Freshman Lauren Ray scored 173.30 points to earn second place while freshman Kate Scarbrough had 142.65 points.

Sophomore Meredith Budner finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.65 seconds while freshman Maggie Macedonia took second place with a time of 54.38 seconds.

Sophomore Erica Hall won the 200-yard backstroke to lead the Tigers in the event, touching the wall in 2:10.46. Senior Erin Bohnert was third in the event with a time of 2:13.61.

The Tigers will continue their three-meet homestand next Saturday when they host William & Mary at Burdick Pool at 1 p.m.
