Solid Play Leads Towson Past Loyola 75-66 in Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. ? The Towson women's basketball team scored nine of the 11 points recorded in the final three minutes and held off a late Loyola (Md.) rally for a 75-66 victory in its season opener. The Tigers (1-0) have now won three straight against the Greyhounds (1-2).

A three-pointer by Meredith Tolley pulled Loyola to within two at 66-64 with 2:56 remaining in the game. Towson responded as junior Shanae Baker-Brice converted a three-point play on a lay-up and a free throw. Sophomore Omara Parker banked home a jumper at 1:55 to put the visitors up 71-64. Baker-Brice scored four of the next six points from the foul line to seal the victory for the Tigers.

Towson had opened the game hot, scoring seven points before Loyola got a shot off. Parker scored six points in the opening three and a half minutes to put Towson up 11-2. The two teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes before a lay-up by Parker at 10:40 put the Tigers up 19-10, their largest lead of the first half. The Greyhounds outscored the Tigers 12-6 over the next three minutes to cut the visitors' lead to three at 25-22. Siobhan Prior scored seven of the 12 points for Loyola. The Tigers went back up by six at 6:11 following a free throw by junior Haliena Snowden. Tolley hit a trey at three minutes allowing Loyola to tie the score at 31-31.

A converted free throw by Melissa Bangay at 2:34 gave Loyola its first lead of the game 32-31. Parker hit a three-pointer with :46 left in the half to send the Tigers into the break with a 36-33 advantage. The Greyhounds shot 50% in the first half to Towson's 43.8%.

The teams came out of the break and traded baskets with the score tied at 40-40 with 16:30 to play. A jumper by junior Kandace Davis started a 12-2 Tiger run opening up a 52-42 advantage. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next couple of minutes as the Tigers lead went from seven to 10 points over that stretch. A jumper by junior Katrina Wheeler at 6:27 gave the Tigers a 66-56 lead.

That would be the last basket converted by the Tigers till Baker-Brice's three point play at 2:27. The Greyhounds scored five unanswered points after Wheeler's basket setting the stage for Tolley's trey at 2:56.

Making her first career start, Parker poured in a career-high 23 points including three three-point baskets. Baker-Brice tied for the team-lead with 23 points and also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Wheeler, making her first start for the Tigers and playing for the first time in nearly two years after transferring had 18 points. Davis finished with six points and seven rebounds while senior Alis Freeman had six assists and three steals.

Prior led the Greyhounds with 17 points while Kaitlin Grant had a “double-double” finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Erica DiClemente knocked down 14 points and added five rebounds.

Towson returns to action on Saturday, November 22 vs. Davidson at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will be making their home debut as part of triple-header Saturday at Towson.
