TOWSON, Md. - Four new members of the Towson University Athletic Hall of Fame, including Mike Bruno, '76, Carrie Leger, '96, Mark Orlando, '94 and Meilani Smith Snellenberger, '96, were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual induction ceremony on Friday evening. In addition, the 1976 Tiger football team was honored as a Team Of Distinction and Tommy Appel Schumacher was named as the winner of the Doc Minnegan Scholarship Award. Bruno, a three-time All-Mason-Dixon Conference selection, reminisced about playing soccer games on the old Burdick Field. He also recognized former coach Jack McDonald for giving the opportunity to play at Towson. The oldest of five brothers who graduated from Towson, he told the audience how there was a member of his family attending Towson for 17 straight years.
A three-time All-ECAC gymnast, Leger led the Tigers to ECAC championships in 1993 and 1995. Despite suffering back problems, she enjoyed a tremendous career in which she scored nearly 1,200 points. She gave credit to Coach Dick Filbert and Assistant Coach Lynda Filbert for starting her post-graduate career in 1996. Currrently the Director of the Academic Support Program For Student-Athletes at North Carolina State, she recalled, "They fired me as a gymnast because of my back problems. Then they got me a job working in the Athletic Department. I use lessons I learned from them every day."
An All-American wide receiver, Orlando set school records for receiving yards (3,460) and receiving touchdowns (31) in a career. He gave credit to all his teammates for his success and said, "When you're a wide receiver, a lot of things have to go right before you ever catch a pass."
A record-setting swimmer. Smith Snellenberger thanked her Coach, Ray Riordon, for her success. She recalled, "At first I thought he didn't like me. But then I found out he just doesn't like freshmen."
Nearly 30 players from the 1976 Tigers attended the dinner. The Tigers finished as NCAA Division III runners-up and played in the Stagg Bowl in 1976. In addition, seven members of the coaching staff. were on hand. All-American quarterback Dan Dullea and Coach Phil Albert spoke on behalf of the team.
