Brown Holds Off Tigers for 2-0 Win

TOWSON, Md. – Hoping to get their first win in a three-game homestand, the Tigers put offensive pressure on Brown early and often and outshot the Bears by a 21-11 margin. However, the Bears used a pair of second half goals to earn their first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Towson at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Junior defender Kate Scott and senior midfielder Melissa Kim each scored a goal in the second half as the Bears snapped their season-opening four-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Tigers will enter their Colonial Athletic Association schedule next week with a 4-4-1 record.

“It was a good opponent today and we were able to fight hard,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “The statistics will show that we had our chances and we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities.”

Following a scoreless first half, the Bears took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when Scott scored on a header after a corner kick by junior Sylvia Stone for her first goal of the season.

With 14:49 remaining, the Bears upped the advantage to 2-0 when Kim tallied her first goal of the season on a quick restart after a short pass from freshman Diana Ohrt.

Senior goalkeeper Steffi Yellin earned her eighth career shutout by making four saves.

Junior goalkeeper Kristen Sample posted four saves for the Tigers, who were playing their final non-conference game of the regular season.

The Tigers will finish their three-game homestand on Thursday afternoon when they host Virginia Commonwealth University in their CAA opener at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the Bears will host Army on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
