ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State earned a 3-1 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action. Shelynne Hoyt recorded the 300th block of her career in the loss for the Tigers (12-8, 0-3 CAA).
In the first set, the Panthers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead on a kill by Jamiee Freeman. Georgia State extended its advantage to 16-11 on a kill by Ashley Jones and would take the first set by a 25-16 score. The second set was a battle between the two teams as neither side could get a lead of more than two points in the set. Kelsey Hoefer had six kills and Katy Buck added nine digs in the set to lead the Tigers to a 26-24 win.
Georgia State jumped out to an early lead in the third set. A block by Raquel Jones gave the Panthers an 18-8 lead and eventually a 25-12 win in the set. Jones added four kills and five digs in the fourth set to help Georgia State earn a 25-18 win and take the match.
Hoyt becomes the eighth player in school history to reach 300+ blocks in her career. She added six kills and six digs in the match. Amanda Halls posted her fifth straight "double-double" and sixth of the season for the Tigers. Halls contributed 12 kills and 16 digs. Hoefer led the team with 13 kills while Lauren Tonokawa posted 17 digs. Buck finished with seven kills, 13 digs and a service ace.
Jones led Georgia State with a "double-double" of 14 kills and 16 digs. Vineece Verdun led all players with 16 kills and six block assists. Freeman added 13 digs and five blocks while Chelsea Perry contributed 39 assists and eight digs.
The Tigers return to action when they return home on Friday, October 8. Towson will host William & Mary at 7 p.m. in the Towson Center.
