Tigers Fall at UNC Wilmington, 64-57

WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington jumped out to a five-point halftime lead and held off a second half charge by the Tigers to claim the 64-57 victory. The Tigers (13-13, 7-8 CAA) got a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss from Katrina Wheeler.

"We had some costly turnovers and could not get some of the shots we needed to fall down," said Coach Joe Mathews. "We need to find a consistency in our play if we want to succeed."

UNC Wilmington jumped out to an early 11-3 lead as Treasure Johnson completed a three-point play at 14:18. Towson responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 13-13 with 11:12 remaining in the half. Haliena Snowden and Charmonique Watt each had three points during the stretch. The two teams traded buckets over the next several minutes with a Casey Sawhook three-pointer at 5:57 giving the home team a 23-19 edge. Back-to-back buckets by Shanae Baker-Brice tied the game at 23-23 with 4:23 to go in the half. The Seahawks scored seven of the final nine points in the half to take a 30-25 lead.

Omara Parker hit back-to-back treys to open the second half and put the Tigers up one, 31-30. The Seahawks responded with a 9-0 run to take a 39-31 edge with 14:19 to play. Johnson connected for five of the nine points in that stretch. The Seahawks' lead would fluctuate between five and seven points over the next few minutes and stood at 44-39 with 10:05 to play. The Tigers would score five of the next seven points to cut their deficit to 46-44 with 8:53 to play. UNC Wilmington would push its lead back to five with 7:16 to go. Six straight points by the Tigers allowed the visitors to take a 50-49 lead with 6:15 to go. The teams would trade buckets with a pair of Wheeler free throws at 5:05 tying the game at 52-52. UNC Wilmington would end the game on a 12-5 run to capture the v64-57 victory.

Wheeler was one of three Tigers in double figures and added three steals. Baker-Brice finished with 12 points, four rebounds and six assists. Parker contributed 11 points in the contest.

Johnson led the Seahawks with 13 points and five rebounds while Greta Luksyte chipped in with 11 points. Martha White was the third Seahawk in double figures with 10 points while Candace Walker led the home team on the boards with eight.

Towson returns home to play its final two home games of the year, starting Thursday February 25 against Hofstra at 7 p.m.
