TOWSON, Md. – Former DePaul University standout Rashon Burno has been named as an assistant men's basketball coach at Towson University, it has been announced by Coach Pat Kennedy.
Burno replaces Allen Edwards, who left the Tigers after last season to become a member of the men's basketball staff at Western Kentucky University.
“It's always fabulous whenever you can hire a former player,” Coach Kennedy said. “In this case, because it is Rashon, it's even more special.
“Rashon is one of the hardest workers and best coaches on the floor I have ever coached in 30 years,” Coach Kennedy added.
“Rashon is a tremendous addition to our staff and we welcome him, his two twin sons, Shon and Micah, and his wife, Ellen, to the Tiger basketball family.”
A four-year letter winner for Coach Kennedy at DePaul from 1998 to 2002, Burno finished his career ranked third in school history with 201 steals. The only three-time team captain in DePaul basketball history, he led the Blue Demons in steals as a sophomore, junior and senior.
As a sophomore, he helped the Blue Demons reach the National Invitation Tournament with an 18-13 record, scoring 6.7 points per game. Burno led the team with 80 steals and 148 assists, which rank third and 14th in school history, respectively.
During his junior season, Burno averaged 6.7 points per game along with a team-high 40 steals as DePaul earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament with a 21-12 record. He was also named the Conference USA All-Tournament Team.
In his final year at DePaul, Burno averaged 4.2 points per game and had a team-high 41 steals.
After his college career, Burno entered the business sector as an investment banker at Wachovia Securities before a three-year stint as the head coach of the Marmion Academy boys' basketball team. He helped the Cadets post a 42-38 record during his tenure, including a 17-10 record this past season.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., Burno played his scholastic basketball at St. Anthony's High School for Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley and won the national championship in his junior and senior seasons.
Coach Burno will begin his duties on Tuesday, August 10.
