Tribe Trims Tigers On Three-Pointers, 83-68

TOWSON, Md. - Freshman guard Julian Boatner exploded for a career high 22 points and led a barrage of three-point baskets as hot-shooting William & Mary (6-12, 2-5) rolled to its second consecutive victory, an 83-68 Colonial Athletic Association win over Towson University (4-13, 0-7) at the Towson Center on Wednesday evening.

The Tribe, which had snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 80-66 victory over Drexel on Saturday night, connected on a seasonal high 55.8 per cent of its shots from the floor and made 14 of 27 of three-point attempts against Towson.

William & Mary's 14 three-point baskets made was one shy of tying the Towson Center record of 15 three-pointers, set by Hofstra in 2006.

Boatner, whose previous career scoring high was an 11-point showing against Syracuse in November, made six of seven three-point attempts against Towson and connected on four of five free throw attempts. He was one of six Tribe players to make at least one three-point basket.

Leading by 41-31 at halftime, the Tribe scored the first nine points of the second half to take a commanding 50-31 advantage. From that point on, William & Mary cruised to the victory, scoring a seasonal high 83 points.

Boatner, who made his first three shots from three-point range, helped the hot-shooting Tribe jump out to a 28-14 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game. William & Mary connected on 10 of its first 16 shots from the floor, including five of ten three-pointers.

Boatner, who entered the game with a 3.8 scoring average, enabled the Tribe to build a 41-31 halftime lead. In the first half alone, the Bloomington, Ind. native scored a career high 15 points as he connected on five of six three-point field goal attempts.

While building a 41-31 halftime lead, the Tribe shot 57.5 per cent from the floor and made 8 of 15 three-point tries. Meanwhile, the Tigers were held to 43.3 per cent shooting.

"They got cooking early," said Towson Coach Pat Kennedy. "Their freshman guard (Boatner), who was averaging about four points per game, really lit it up.

"We're reaching for straws now," he added. "It seems that no matter what defense we go to, it seems like people are getting open looks in open spots on the floor where they are knocking down shots. Our momentum was the opposite momentum. We played pretty well against Delaware (on Saturday). Two 'Hail Mary' shots took that game away from us or we would have come into this game with a more positive outlook. Right now, we are struggling to get that first win to get a positive feel about ourselves. The kids continue to work very hard, day in and day out."

Led by Boatner, all five starters scored in double figures for the Tribe. Freshman guard Brandon Britt, who was the CAA Rookie of the Week last week, added 16 points and made three of five three-pointers.

Junior Quinn McDowell tallied 12 points for the Tribe while junior JohnMark Ludwick and senior Marcus Kitts scored ten points each.

The Tribe, which never trailed in the game, had 20 assists on 29 baskets en route to the victory.

The Tigers, who lost their sixth consecutive game, were led by junior Braxton Dupree, who scored 17 points and grabbed a game high six rebounds. Dupree made all nine of his free throw attempts.

Senior guard Josh Brown, who shot 7-for-11 from the floor, tallied 15 points while freshman Erique Gumbs scored a career high 12 points on six-for-seven shooting from the floor.

Led by Dupree, the Tigers made 14 of 15 free throw attempts.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday night when they visit UNC Wilmington at 9:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on MASN.
