Tigers Closing In On Attendance Records

TOWSON, Md. - Ranked 25th in NCAA FCS, the Towson University football team has enjoyed success on the playing field and in the stands this season.

The Tigers, who host No. 14 Richmond in their fourth home game of the season on Saturday night, have drawn an average of 9,125 fans to each of their first three homes games.

With a total attendance of 27,374 through three games, the Tigers are just shy of breaking the Johnny Unitas® Stadium record for single season attendance. A crowd of between 9,000-10,000 fans will be enough to set the record after four games.

The record was set in 2007 when 35,693 fans attended five home games.

Coach Rob Ambrose has been overwhelmed by the support of the community. He says, "It's very exciting and it makes me proud. I am proud of our school, our students and our program. We are changing the way we see ourselves as athletes, as students, as alumnus, as a community when we think of football and how it impacts everyone.  By proxy, we are changing how the nation sees us. I am overwhelmed with Tiger pride."

In the season opener against Morgan State, the Tigers drew a crowd of 9,759. At the time, it was the third-largest crowd in Unitas Stadium history. In the Tigers' second home game, a win over then-No. 20 Villanova, there were 7,696 fans in attendance. In their Homecoming Game, a crowd of 9,919 watched the Tigers beat Colgate. That became the third-largest crowd in stadium history.

While the Tigers are averaging more than 9,000 fans per home game, students have been turning out in record numbers. In the season opener, there were 3,397 students in the crowd, followed by 3,007 students for the Villanova game and a single game record of 4,036 students on hand for Colgate.

Towson University has also been very successful attracting fans from local youth football programs and other groups, selling nearly 3,000 group tickets.

Director of Athletics Mike Waddell states that taking marketing directly to the grass roots level has been a focal point of the drive to become "Baltimore's College Football Team".

"We have an outstanding external team that works in our fan development area, led by Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mike Harris and Towson Alumnus and Assistant Director of Athletics Mike Hollis," Waddell said.  "Along with Stephen Toutsis, Brandon Weiner, and Brian King, this team has hit the ground running in the community with an aggressive group sales campaign targeting youth sports and professional groups. We are also blessed to have Ryan Wolfe, a TU class of 2011 graduate, on our team directing our fan development efforts with our students. The students have been magnificent in showing support for their Tigers."

Waddell adds, "From the hundreds of young football players and cheerleaders who have been a part of our Tiger Tunnels to the alumni who are coming back in greater numbers each week, our Towson Tiger Nation is growing and we are very thankful for the support. It really makes a difference in the atmosphere around the "U" and it will only grow in numbers and in volume in the years to come."

After Saturday's game against Richmond at 7:30 p.m., the Tigers host Delaware on Oct. 29. The Tigers close out their home schedule on Nov. 12 against New Hampshire.
