Manhattan Pulls Away Late From Towson, 81-62

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Robert Nwankwo fell just short of his fifth double-double of the season with a career-high tying 19 points and nine rebounds, but his performance wasn't enough as Manhattan overcame an early nine-point deficit to top Towson, 81-62, Tuesday evening in the Towson Center.

Towson (0-11) scored a season-high 62 points and won the rebounding battle (33-25) for the sixth time this season. The Tigers also shot a season-high 75.8 percent (25-for-33) from the free throw line, but were hurt severely by 23 turnovers that led to 28 Manhattan points.

Nwankwo recorded a season-high eight field goals on just 11 attempts, while also blocking three shots and swiping a pair of steals. Freshman Jervon Pressley returned from a one-game absence to score a season-high nine points and classmate Kris Walden netted seven points and turned the ball over just once.

Junior guard George Beamon scored a game-high 21 points to lead Manhattan (8-4) to its fifth consecutive win and keep the Jaspers perfect in the month of December. Manhattan hurt Towson from three-point range, going 10-for-23 beyond the arc.

The Tigers opened the game with a 13-4 run to lead by nine early in the first half for the second consecutive contest. The Jaspers responded though by scoring 15 of the next 20 points to take their first lead of the game, 19-18, at the 10:26 mark of the opening period.

Towson freshman Will Adams made consecutive free throws to give the Tigers the lead back briefly, but Manhattan scored the next nine points to ignite a 20-3 run that put the Jaspers up 39-23 with just over five minutes remaining in the stanza. Despite trailing by 16, the Tigers closed the half strong and only trailed 39-29 at the intermission.

Towson continued its momentum into the second half and with 14:10 remaining in the game, a three-point play by Pressley cut the Tigers' deficit to 49-47. However, Manhattan answered with a 7-0 run as Beamon's three-pointer upped the Jasper lead to 56-47 with 12:11 left. Manhattan closed out the victory by holding Towson to one basket in the final eight minutes.

The Tigers will play their final non-conference home game of the season Friday as Vermont arrives at the Towson Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
