Parnell and Dryver lead Tigers Past Mason, 59-53

FAIRFAX, Va. - Krystal Parnell and Jaleesa Dryver combined for 30 points to lead the Tigers to a 59-53 win over George Mason on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers (9-17, 3-12 CAA) and gave the visitors their first road win since December 18 at UMES.

"I thought this was the beginning of what has been a long time coming," said Parnell, who led the team with 19 points. "We have been working really hard in practice so it was nice to get a win."

The Tigers jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first half. Krystin Fields had five of the first eight for the Tigers. George Mason pulled to within two, at 8-6 before Towson notched eight unanswered points to take a 16-6 advantage with 7:54 to play. A Simona Petronyte triple at 6:48 gave Towson a 19-8 lead. It was Towson's largest lead of the game and tied Petronyte with former teammate, Shanae Baker-Brice for eighth on the career three-pointers made list at Towson with 94.The Patriots used a 12-2 run to pull within one, 21-20 with 1:46 to play. Brittany Poindexter had six points for George Mason during that run. Towson scored the final seven points of the half to take a 28-20 lead at the break.

Towson shot 36% from the floor and 80% from three-point range in the first half. Parnell led the Tigers with eight at the break. George Mason shot 28.6% from the floor and got eight points from Amber Easter.

George Mason opened the second half on an 11-4 run to pull to within one, 32-31 with 14:34 to play. Easter had seven of the Patriots' 11 during that stretch. Towson responded with a 9-4 stretch of its own to lead 41-35 with 10:30 to go in the game. Dryver had six of the Tiger's nine during that stretch. A Poindexter lay-up at 9:11 made it a 41-40 game. Towson scored seven of the next nine to lead 48-42 with 6:10 to play. The two teams traded baskets with a Sheree Ledbetter lay-up at 2:19 giving Towson a 54-46 lead.  Towson went 5-for-7 from the foul line in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Towson finished the game shooting 38.3% from the floor and 57.1% from three-point range. George Mason shot 36.4% from the floor and 23.1% from three-point range. The Patriots won the battle on the boards by a 37-36 margin.

Parnell added a career-high 10 assists to go along with her 19 points, giving her her first career "double-double" as a Tiger. Dryver finished with a career-high 11 points, all of which came during the second half. Dovile Miliauskaite led the Tigers on the boards with 11 while adding seven points and five steals.

Easter led all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Poindexter finished with 12 points for George Mason while Taleia Moton added 10 points.

Towson returns home on Thursday, February 24 when it hosts UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. It will be the Tigers' "Pink Zone" game and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to support breast cancer awareness.
