10 Things To Know About The Towson-Morgan Game

TOWSON, Md. - Ten things to know about the season opener between the Tigers and Morgan State.

#1 - MEGGETT: The 1988 Walter Payton Award winner, David Meggett is the most prominent player to play for both sides in the Towson-Morgan rivalry. Meggett, who wore #1 for the Tigers, played for Morgan in the 1984 and 1985 games when the Tigers won twice. The versatile Meggett played quarterback, running back and defensive back for the Bears. In 1985, he actually set a Unitas Stadium record by intercepting three passes, a mark that still stands. After sitting out the 1986 season as a transfer student, he was moved to tailback at Towson.
In 1987, he rushed for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 39-10 win over his former teammates. A fifth round draft pick by the New York Giants, he enjoyed a nine-year career in the NFL and earned All-Pro honors.
David Meggett was held in such high esteem by his teammates that he was a team captain at both schools. He was a Morgan co-captain in 1985 and captained the Tigers in 1988. 

#2 - SHUTOUTS: There have been two shutouts in the 22-game series. In 1983, the Tigers shut out Morgan, 48-0, in the Tigers' Homecoming Game. In 1986, the Tigers pulled out a 21-0 victory over the Bears at Hughes Stadium.

#3 - MORGAN WINS: The Towson-Morgan series began in 1979 when both schools were members of NCAA Division II. The Tigers were a first-year Division II program in 1979 while Morgan was an established Division II program. In fact, Morgan State earned an NCAA Division II playoff bid in 1979. In 1979, the Bears ruined the Tigers' Division II debut with a 34-7 victory. In 1980, the Bears pulled out a 14-10 win in the final seconds at Hughes Stadium. In 1981, Morgan held off a Tiger comeback with a 17-13 victory at Towson.

#4 - CLOSE GAMES: In the Towson-Morgan series, four games have been decided by three points and all of them have occured in the last eight games. Each team has won two of the three-point games. In 2001, the Tigers edged Morgan in overtime, 20-17, on a field goal by Ed Kulic. In 2003, the Bears pulled out a 19-16 victory at Hughes Stadium. In 2005, a field goal by Ron Halbruner with one second left gave Towson a 29-26 win. In the most recent meeting, the Bears pulled off a 12-9 victory at Hughes Stadium.

#5 - TONY VINSON TOUCHDOWNS: In the final game of his college career, All-American running back Tony Vinson of Towson scored five touchdowns in the Tigers' 56-12 win over Morgan State in the 1993 season finale. Vinson, who led the nation in rushing, picked up 327 yards against the Bears and finished the season with 2,016 rushing yards in 1993.

#6 - MARGIN OF VICTORY: In the only game of the series played on a neutral site, Morgan State beat the Tigers, 28-22, in 1999. The game was played at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University because Hughes Stadium was being renovated.

#7 - TOUCHDOWNS PASSES BY SCHAEFER: Quarterback Sean Schaefer of Towson threw seven career touchdown passes against Morgan State in leading the Tigers to four wins over the Bears from 2004 to 2007.

#8 - SEASON OPENERS: The Tigers and the Bears have played eight season openers. Each team has won four of them. Morgan won season openers in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 2003.

#9 - CONSECUTIVE WINS: The Tigers won nine straight games in the series from 1982 to 1998.

#10 - WINS BY GORDY COMBS: Former Tiger Coach Gordy Combs won ten games against Morgan State during his career as the Tigers' coach.
