PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior defensive end Frank Beltre and senior free safety Jordan Dangerfield of Towson University have been named to The Sports Network's Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America team.
Beltre and Dangerfield, who led the Tigers to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships, earned third team All-America honors.
A two-time All-CAA first team selection, Beltre was one of the top defensive linemen in the CAA the last three years. A three-year starter at defensive end, he was seventh on the team with 36 tackles as a senior. He tied for the team lead with five quarterback sacks as Towson led the CAA with 31 sacks. He was also tied for fourth in the CAA in sacks. Beltre was also third on the team with 7.5 tackles for lost yardage. He also forced two fumbles and had one fumble recovery.
Beltre, who played in all 45 career games, finished his career with 232 tackles, 20th on Towson's all-time list. He also had 38 tackles for lost yardage, 11 sacks and two fumble recoveries.
A two-year co-captain and a three-year starter at free safety, Dangerfield also earned first team All-CAA first team honors for the second time. Despite missing the final game of the season, he was fourth on the team with 69 tackles. Dangerfield, who also earned pre-season All-America honors, led the Tigers with six pass breakups and had one fumble recovery.
The Tigers' top tackler as a sophomore and junior, Dangerfield finished his career with 258 tackles, 11th on Towson's career list. He also broke up 13 passes and recovered four fumbles.
Dangerfield was also honored as a second team All-American by Beyond Sports Network.
Beltre and Dangerfield were keys to the best defense in the CAA. En route to a 7-4 final record, the Tigers led the CAA in fewest yards allowed (313.2) and pass defense (174.3 ypg). Towson also topped the CAA in sacks with 31.
The No. 15 Tigers claimed a share of the CAA championship as they tied for first place with New Hampshire (8-4, 6-2), Richmond (8-3, 6-2) and Villanova (8-4, 6-2). Playing the fourth-toughest schedule in NCAA FCS, the Tigers won their final four games of the season, beating No. 19 Villanova, No. 23 Delaware and No. 7 New Hampshire on the road.
Towson has a 16-7 over the last two seasons, including an impressive 13-3 mark in CAA games. In games against FCS programs the last two years, Towson has a 16-4 mark.
