Late Three Lifts Hofstra Past Tigers, 69-66

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.Nicole Capurso hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to lift Hofstra to a 69-66 victory over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (16-10, 7-8 CAA) had a four-game win streak snapped despite 20 points and eight rebounds from senior guard/forward Deree Fooks.

The Tigers quickly opened up a 6-0 lead in the game behind a pair of buckets from Fooks. Hofstra (18-8, 10-5 CAA) cut it to one at 6-5 before the Tigers pushed their lead back to five, 12-7 behind a jumper from freshman guard Ciara Webb. The Pride made it a 12-11 game with 12:36 remaining in the half, however sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller responded by scoring six of the next eight points in the game for the Tigers. McTiller's run put the Tigers ahead 18-13 with 11:23 to play in the half. A three-pointer from Katelynn Loper and a basket from Shante Evans tied the game at 18-18. A 9-1 run from the Tigers gave Towson a 27-19 advantage with 5:49 to play in the half. That would be the Tigers' largest lead of the game. Hofstra scored 11 of the final 18 points in the half to send the visitors into the locker room with a 34-30 edge.

Towson shot 50% from the field in the first half while Hofstra shot 38.7%. The Pride held a slight 17-16 edge in the rebounding battle.

Hofstra scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second half to grab a 40-36 lead with 17:35 to play. Evans had six of the 10 points during that stretch for Hofstra. Four straight points from Fooks tied the game at 40-40 with 16:22 to play. The two teams would trade baskets over the next several minutes and after Webb hit one of two from the line with 10:52 to play, they were tied again at 50-50. Towson scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 58-51 lead with 7:57 to play. The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court as senior guard Krystin Fields hit a pair from the charity stripe at 5:18 to make Towson's lead 62-54. Hofstra used a 12-2 run to take a 66-64 lead with one minute to play. Senior guard Sheree Ledbetter hit a pair from the foul line with 43 seconds left to tie the game at 66-66. Capurso hit her triple with 16 seconds left to give Hofstra the lead. Towson was unable to convert on their final shot opportunity.

The Tigers shot 36% from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 43.4%. Hofstra shot 35.7% in the second half and 37% for the game. Hofstra finished the game with a 48-32 advantage in the rebounding battle.

Fooks added two steals to go along with her 20 points and eight rebounds. Fields contributed 13 points and four rebounds while McTiller added 11 points and three steals. Senior guard Krystal Parnell was the fourth Tiger in double figures as she finished with 10 points and four assists.

Evans led Hofstra with 29 points and 20 rebounds while Candace Bond finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 23 when they visit UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. game.
