TOWSON, Md. - The new and improved Charles Village Pub, commonly known as "CVP," welcomed the first Coaches Caravan of the 2012-13 year last night. With over 13 head coaches in attendance, the event was immediately off to a great start for Tiger fans.
Speeches by Director of Athletics Mike Waddell and head coaches Joe Mathews (women's basketball), Pat Skerry (men's basketball team), Shawn Nadelen (men's lacrosse team) and Rob Ambrose (football) headlined the event.
Over 60 people enjoyed lite appetizers and beverages on CVP's second floor and tuned into the first Tiger Talk of the season, hosted by Damon Lewis and Spiro Morekas. The live broadcast featuring various Towson head coaches speaking about the future of their programs and the excitement around the 2012-13 academic and athletic year. Tiger Talk ended at 7 p.m., and the theme "Expect Success" began to ring through the venue.
Morekas served as the evening's emcee, introducing Waddell who thanked all in attendance and spoke on the goals for the upcoming year. The crowd also enjoyed some captivating videos on the direction and future vision of the Athletics Department with the "Expect Success" video as well as the "Tiger Arena" video.
The bright future was a common theme in the room.
"What we did in the past was awesome, what we did in the past is over, but what we're doing tonight is great," Coach Ambrose stated. "Dwelling on the past won't make for a great future, but if everyone is on board to contribute to the success of the student-athlete, there is a lot to look forward to."
Coach Mathews also shared that same enthusiasm about his team this year. Although he only has a handful of players with more than a year of Towson Basketball experience, he said, "I like them! They're a hungry group!" Coach Mathews also expressed his gratitude to all those who are a part of the positive change taking place:
"It's all about the people...thank you to the coaches, thank you to the people...Thank you to the Tiger Club."
Adding humor to the speeches, Coach Skerry compared last season to a "root canal with no Novacaine, but I made it. Last year is over, and we are very excited about our group of guys. The future is looking very bright for Towson men's basketball."
Rounding out the speeches for the evening, Coach Nadelen emphasized the importance of the players, the growth and success. Nadelen mentioned the challenges that are often dealt with, yet the importance of standing behind standards that are set for his team. He will have a large roster this upcoming season of over 39 players, but as he stated, "It's not how many you go to battle with, it's who."
